(tt) TO SELECT NEW HOUSE Twelve Premiers Have Guided Pol icies Since Manitoba Entered Confederation WINNIPEO, July 11: (CP) When Manitoba voters go to the polls July 27 they will elect the 20th legislative assembly In the 66-year-old history of the province. Twelve premiers have guided the destinies of the province since the one-time Red River cplony entered confederation In 1870. The first leslature was elected In 1870 and convened March 15, 1871. The 19th legislature was elected June 16, 1932, and was dissolved June of this year and the el ectlon date for the 20th leglsla tlve assembly set. Nominations will be received July 17. Party politics made Its debut In the provincial field when Hon. John Norquay, Conservative, was elected premier October 16, 1873 but even at that time party lines' were not clearly defined. The frontier province's first pre mier was Hon. A. Boyd who -took office September 16, 1870, and re mained In power until December 14, 1871. Hon. N. A. Girard succeeded him and remained In office until 1872 when Hon. H. J. H. Clarke became premier until July 8, 1874. Hon. N. A. Girard became pre mier In succession to Mr. Clarke until December, 1874, when he, in turn, was succeeded by Hon. R. A Davis, premier until October 16, 1778. The Norquay Conservative administration went Into power in the province's first party political battle at that time. Hon. D. H. Harrison succeeded Premier Norquay but he was de feated two months after taking office and the Liberal adminis tration of Hon. T. Greenway took over the government January 19, 1888. Sir Hugh John Macdonald headed the Conservative adminis tration for eight months in 1900. Then another Conservative pre mier. Sir R. P. Roblln, succeeded him to remain in power for 15 years. Bracken Takes Hold The Liberal government of Hon. T. C. Norris succeeded the Roblln administration in 1915 and was defeated in the rise of the Farmer's Progressive party In 1922. It was then that the present pre mier, Hon. John Bracken, was called to lead the government. Mr. Bracken headed the straight Progressive government until 1932 when an arrangement was effected to bring into the government lead ing members of the Liberal party and the Liberal-Progressive affiliation was arranged. Premier Bracken remained as head of the new government and is leading the joint forces In the present election campaign. BUILDING DISCUSSED (Continued irom Page 1 The question of financing, of course, came up. President W. M. Brown revealed that the board at present had something like $9000 in the new building fund. He doubted, "U. another $5,000 could, be raised by" -the'irUtlieHrir sources of finance would be the provincial government, the city and the citizens. , City Commissioner W. J.Aldet was present but he gave no hint as to what possible assistance might be expected from the city. Any money that the city gave he re minded the board could come In onlv one way and that was through taxation of the people. His policy had been to trim expenditures as closely as possible In order to keep the taxes down to a minimum. Dr. J, II, Carson suggested that the provincial government put up forty percent, the city forty percept and the board twenty percent. Frank Dibb suggested that the government be asked for" sixty per cent with twenty percent from the city. Getting back to construction details. Miss Harrison suggested that, in any future building, public : wards be kept down to the maxi mum of four patient capacity. She also stressed the urgency of more adequate housing for help. The advisability of Including a laundry was also mentioned. Finally it was decided thai the committee of Mr. Whlttaker, Miss Harrison and Dr. Carson should present a preliminary plan which might be used by the board as a haxl for a more definite line of action to be arrived at by a spe clal meeting next Monday night.
