IN MERRIEST MASQUERADE McIntyre Hall Last Night was a Lively Scene with Music and Motley. In the McIntyre Hall last night the first masquerade ball of the season was held as a Thanksgiving Night celebration. The masquer- ade was a great about forty merry couples being present in costume. motley was worn by the men and the ladies appeared in some very dainty disguises. Prizes were ol- fered for the most effective cot- tumes, the winners being: Lady s Prize—A silver chate- Jaine, won by Mrs, Casely for her clever coon costume in company with Mrs. Shoemaker as her coon partner. Miss Bella Falconer scored over the mere males present by carrying off the gentlemen's prize of a handsome umbrella. Her costume, that of a charming young prince fit for the pages of the most romantic story book, was — de- clared a winner from the word go. success Judges in the competition were Mr. Gottstein, Mr. Barker and Mrs. Frizzell. Round the last named centres an amusing in- cident showing the perfection of the disguises last night. Mr. George Frizze}] was to have acted with the other two gentlemen named as judge. He was nowhere to be found and his wife herself sought for him in vain. Mrs. Frizzell] was asked to take her husband's place and did so. Im- mediately after the order to un- mask the whole company recog- nized the missing George Frizzell in the person of one of the prin- cipal masqueraders. Sandy Gazley as a comica] Dutchman, kept the whole company in a roar al)’ the evening and Gray’s orchestra under whose auspices the masquerade was organised was present in full strength and great form. Everyone present enjoyed the fun to the ful] expressing the general feeling that masquerade dances in Rupert are the most popular of all, and the more there are of them this season the better. A ROW BOAT TRIP Two Men in a Skiff Rowed Round Kaien Island in Six Hours. The trip round Kaien Island has been . frequently attempted by gasoline craft when the tides permit the rapids being ventured. On Sunday afternoon the trip was ~ made in a four-oared skiff by Mr. H. S. Cowper of the steamer Prince George and his brother, J. S. Cowper of this city. The trip started with a jaunt to Shawatlans Lake, the decision to complete the round trip being made on the spur of the moment. Both rapids were negotiated easily, it being nearly high water when Zanardi bridge was reached. The pull up the harbor against the tide at the end of the journey was the stiffest part of the journey but the travellers mananged to cut off seven miles of a pull round Porpoise Island by portaging their craft across the neck of Porpoise Island when the tide was nearly full. Allowing for a deviation from the course through following a false bay before picking up Lake Wainwright, the course scales ap- proximately twenty miles, and was accomplished in six hours flat. Several schools of seal were encountered at the back of the island in Lake Morse,: apparently on the trail of the salmon, which are said to be plentiful in Denise Arm ai present. MOM MO OE matinees ever held in the Empress} Theatre at which they presented | to full the charming} comedy “The Judge and the Girl’ | the May Roberts Company pre-| sented in the Victroien | Sardou's brilliant comedy-with-a- | purpose, “‘Divorcons” or translated freely, ‘‘Let us divorce.”’ The play| deftly discloses the essential truth, | that half the trouble from which divorce suits spring lies in the dull matter-of-factness of husbands | contrasted with the romance} and dare-devilry of the attentions| of other admirers of the dis-| contented wives who seek relief in the divorce court. It falls to the lot of M. Henri Des Prunelles whose clever part is taken by L. Victor Gillard in| the piece, to turn the tables com- pletely upon his rival, M. Ahdemar) Gratinac. The play ends in the entire re-instating of the husband, and the utter ridicule of the rival. The leading woman part, that of Mme. Des Pruenelles, played by Miss Roberts brings the discon- tented wife successively through a dozen different distracting emo- tions entirely distinct from the cold hard desire for separation from her husband. She finds herself growing again anxious for his safety, then becoming violently jealous of him, and finally giving his would be supplanter, Adhemar, the coldest turn down he ever experienced when she dashes off delightedly to a little supper at the Cafe with her husband in the style of his bachelor days. The plot is capitally brought out, the players last night one and all were in perfect mastery of their parts. The production was an advance on anything yet seen in Prince Rupert, and gave immense satisfaction to a packed house. Mr. Gillard’s acting was the perfection of restraint and subdued intensity. Miss Roberts thorough- ly realised her part. Miss Frances Williamson as Josepha the French }maid, and Miss Liilian St. John jas Mme. De Brionne both-showed lexcellent ability. Mr. Leonard |Carey, and Mr. Ira Robertson both had double roles to handle and in each acted well, while as the ardent Ahdemar Mr. George Zucco was most effective. The company proved the truth of Mr. Gillard’s statement that during their sojourn in the north all have worked hard studying new plays promised’ for Prince Rupert, and gre putting on nothing which has not been thoroughly rehearsed and brought to perfect pitch for production. Mr. Gillard said some exceedingly complementary things last night about Dawson and Fairbanks, and his remarks were a house evening as | | | plied that he wil! have as pleasant accounts to give of Prince Rupert he continues his as pany.
