At a demonstration at the Kins Gross centre London, a ton of maize a day is being produced in a large gal-vanized-iron cabinet, says the Victoria Times editorially. Inside the cabinet are rows of trays, each tray holding maize at a different stage of growth. In ten days the maize is fully grown and ready for consumption. No soil is used. On top of the cabinet is a tank of water containing solutions of the chemicals' essential to plant .life and growth, and from this tank the plants are fed. By the tenth day the tray with the maize fully grown is ready to be removed from the cabinet and placed in a trough for the animals to eat. There is no waste and 110 dirt. Twenty centres for the development of this agrobiolo gical farming are to be opened in England, 'with the Min istry of Agriculture taking an interest in the 'SPORT Defeated By Don Budge FRED PERRY LOS ANGELES, Sept. 28; (CP) Donald Budge of Oakland,. California, defeated Fred Perry 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 yesterday before a crowd of six thousand spectators to win the men's singles championship of the Pacific southwest tournament. Gracyn Wheeler of Santa Monica, California, upset the national women's tltleholder, Alice Marble of Los Angeles, winning 7-5, 2-6, 6-4. '.HIGH WINS IN OPENER Several New Players Make Debut With Booth in Junior The opening game of the fall schedule of the Junior Football League .on Saturday resulted In a win for King Edward High School (First year) over Booth Memorial School by seven goals to two after play which was much more closely contested than the score would The feature of the first half was the splendid game put up by the elementary school team whose expen-j players showed a surprisingly good ments. It has already been' proved that vegetables bv this : knowledge of the sport and a wii means grow just as well as fodder. In fact, in California "garden" produce from some, of the laboratories under Dr. Gericke has been coming on the market this season. Several San Francisco florists who have been working under Dr. Gericke are now actually selling flowers thus produced rapidly and at lower cost. Wheat is also being grown, with an area the size of a barn yielding the equal of a crop from a full section farm and without being subject to any weather uncertainties. Basically, agriculture has changed little since man settled down to community life and began to till the soil. As a farmer, through the agesj he has had to carry on subject to the weather, the seasons, the natural seed time and harvest time. But now these limits are being removed, with knowledge and new methods making possible produc tion at will of enormously increased food supplies and at lower costs. An agricultural revolution which will parallel in its eco nomic and social effects the industrial revolution that came upon the western world with the advent of steam power, seems impending. As to how it will bear on domestic and foreitm trade. employment, price of lands, ways of life for millions and on international politics through making food self-suffi ciency possible to nations, in war ve leave the reader to draw his own conclusions. The High School players were obviously puzzled for a time by the opposition put up by the Booth team. Another pleasing fea ture was that the High School players did not unduly make use of their advantage in weight. After Scherk had stopped a stinging drive by Ritchie a scramble ensiled and the ball was pushed through to give High the first goal by which they led at halftlme. A grand shot of Hougan's and one of Dick Cameron's deserved scores for Booth. Further goals were scored by Ritchie (four), Baker and Kihara for High In the second half and for Both Cameron got two when the defence slackened off. High was best served by Scherk McLean, Ritchie, Kihara and Baker. With five players In their first game, the Booth bnys put up a good show. Dybhavn, Fle'wln, Watt, Cam eron and Gomez were outstanding. Hodgson played plucklly after t-e ing bruised painfully in a scramble. Hougan and Slmundson showed promise. Andy Home refereed very satis factorily. Schubert and Brown were linesmen. High School Sheehan; Beynon, McKay; Scherk, McLean, Long; Currle, Judge, Ritchie, Baker, ' Booth W.
