V BLACK COD 1 TESTING OF OILS Valuable Service- Btlnr GiVfrt' By Federal Department of Mints OTTAWA; Aug, St-Announce ment is made, by the Departhieni of Mines; Ottawa, of Its Mlrici Brandt laboratory and field prrt-gram for 1936. With the excep. tlohaliy heavy volume of work on gold ores a notable feature, the program reflects the' steady and widespread Improvement In mln inti throughout Canadat Within Its four sections', ore dressing and metallurgy, fuel research, cera mics and road materials, and miheral resources, provision made for tests and investigation! on practically all the principal ana many of the lesser knowj Canadian minerals. John McLeLsh, Director of th Branch, reports that receipts of gold ore for testing during, the. first half of the year exceeded those of -any period In past yeais. In the majority of cases trie ores are from the many gold properties throughout Canada that are entering or nearlng production. Full advantage is being taken by op-uraton of the Department's mod- emjy equipped ore dressing arc' metallurgical laboratories, where the ores are being tested main' to determine suitable mill treatment processes for the several en terprises. Three research' projects' relat-' ing" to' the treatment of 'gold' ores are under way. One' is ori refract ory gold ores such as those' th-t! occur in the Bridgd" RlVei' arcs British' Columbia: The- secondv is an investigation to determine the relationship of the mineralization and genesis of the ores to treatment problems; and the .third is an examination of the modes'-ot occurrences .of gold' in sulphides, and ' the effect on ore treatm'en'-of such associations. A. h. A. Koomson wm' make a fieW-survey of gold' operations in British Columbia. . ., Hase .Metal Work Mole te'st''work is-under way on baae'metdl ores; thdn 'lri' 1935,- but the number of samples received Is small in comparison with pre- depresslon years, when the hhh prices of the metals provided a stimulus for exploratory effort. A notable feature Is the sharp Increase in the number of request for1 test work on nbn-metallic' orfs. The . increase is traceable mainly to the distinct revival' of activities in the" building construction Industries. Tests are being carried out on the benlficlatlon and uses of such minerals as china clay, silica sands and sandstones, quartzite, calcite, garnet, anil mica, and' on the tailings" from' as bestos milling plants". In1 ferrous metallurgy, the causes' of fallure'of machine' pans and of other manufactured metal lurglcal products are being in vestigated. Problems respecting the manufacture and use of higher grade products in industry are also under examinaatlon, Tills year's work on Canadian fuels includes a series of tests being made to dctermlneluw?Rui, lability of a variety of coals' and Lthelf tars' for hydrdgeriation P -treatment for direct' cdriversiod Jnto motoc fuels. Test. runs- have1 tbeen made on coals ranging frotn ;high' grade' bltumlrious' td petit Small scale laboratory work1 in cludes the development of two fc6al friability methods for testing; Mhe relative handling qualities of .coals, with' the ultimate objective of determining a means whereby doals for" any particular purpose rri&y be 'rdadlly selected: A coniprehehslv' field study is being made on the sizing and other preparation of Canadian coals to meet varying market c6n- ditions in- different parts or the country.
