For that reason, knowing his con- dition, I don’t believe he ever will be seen in a ring again against a formidable foe. uM OK Johnson is to return to America soon, Cutler says the champion plans to get one or two ten-round fights in New York with some alleged ‘white hopes’’ to try him- self out. If he finds he not good he will quit the arena for good is Kk uM OK The McGill football team is to be strengthened in the future by the acquisition of two former Royal Military college players, Billy Young and Pat Goldie. They were on the team which won the intermediate championship last year. This season they were at the Boston Tech but they did not like it there and have now registered at McGill. Both are originally Upper Canada college men. Young plays in the scrimmage and Goldie on the wing line. The fine was imposed because of the action of the club in bringing to a sudden and unexpected close the post- season series between the champions and all-stars. When Barrow and the managers of the two teams changed the post-season schedule and came here to play, the gates at Baseball Park were locked on them. ‘ a my lala} Leg S The Worlds | Greatest High- way: : Let us plan OUR TRIPEAST to Europe | | | We like to answer en- Agent for oll Atlantic Call on or write - General Agent | Hotel Choice Wines and Cigars | PALACE OF COMFORT) avoy PERT’S ince Rupert Lodge, 1.0.0.F. It cost eight members of the Chicago National League team $25 apiece to “roast” Umpire O'Loughlin in one of the city series games, Less than a dozen first-class left- handed pitchers are drawing salaries in the big major baseball leagues. As a matter of record, good southpaws always have been Scarce, no matter how far back you may go in the history of the game. Two thousand two hundred and twenty-five miles from Philadelphia to Milwaukee and back on a motor cycle for $7.43 This is the experience of John Benders of the Quaker City. Benders went by way of Harrisburg and Cleveland and returned through Chicago, Albany and New York and used 26 1-4 gallons of gasoline and 4 gallons of oil. President Tipton of the Kentycky Trotting Horse-breeders’ Association, says the loss on the recent meeting at Lexoingtn was $12,000. Bad weather caused several postponements, Frank Nolan, owner of the Beverwyck Stable, has changed his plans, and will not sell his horses, though he disposed of Danfield to George T Hoag, of Calgary. During the Woodbine autumn meeting an offer of $1,500 for this horse was refused in spite of the fact that he is continually on the starter’s schooling list because of unruly actions at the post. A deal has been closed by which Larry Schafly, formerly second baseman and captain of the Toronto team, becomes manager of the Jersey City “Skeeters.”’ The consummation of this deal sets at rest rumors that the Jersey City fran- chise was to be sold to a Boston syn- dicate, and that Charley Hemphill, recently transferred from Chicago to Jersey City, would assume the reins of management. The hockey game will know no more Jack Marshall, the former Winnipegger, one of the few remaining Little Men of Iron—as a player. The accident that almost destroyed the sight of one eye last winter when Jack’s optic came into collision with the stick of an Ottawa player during the first strenuous match, in which Wanderers lost. Marshall was carried off the ice, and it was generally supposed at first that the eye was completely destroyed. Rest and care have nursed it back to working capacity again, however. But though Jack Marshall will appear no more as a player, it is altogether likely that a new shpere of usefu'ness in the sport in which he shone so long and so brilliantly will open up for him. {It is said that he will be one of the regular stait referees of the National Hockey Association this season. If he handles the whistle there’s a big future for Jack as a referee. President Charles T. BATHING IN GOLD Luxury Thzat We'd All Love to Enjoy of a Saturday Night A Parisian journalist who had specu- lated in railway shares won 200,000 franes as the result of a lucky venture. Drawing it in gold, he proceeded to a hotel, emptied the bags of gold in the bed and went to sleep literally in the sands of Pactolus. The man was so crazed by his good fortune that he found indescribable pleasure in revelling in a golden bath. Paganini, the violinist, when he re- ceived the proceeds of his concerts (he insisted upon being paid in gold), used to wash his hands in sovereigns. A French novelist, Soulie, wrote a book called “The Memoirs of the Devil.” It was successful; the pub- lishers paid him for the first volume $10,000 in gold. The author carried | the gold to his bedroom, poured it into a footbath and enjoyed for half an hour the excitement of movjng his feet to subjects of special interest to women. Any and all of the ladies of Prince Rupert are invited to contribute to its columns, and to take part in its discussions. Sug- gestions and criticisms are invited by the editor.
