PULLEN -,- - Managing-Editor Saturday, Nov. 14 ,1936 -Balancing of Budget The President pf the United States suggests that he has a plan for balancing ihe1 budget and naturally the world is looking forward for the announcement in January which will let them into the secret of how to do it. There seem to be-only two- methods of doing this, .either bv col lecting more revenue or .by spending less. If there is some other magical method .we shall all be glad to -learn abbut it. Possibly the plan is to head off the Townsendites by Mayor McGeer has decided not to be a candidate at the forthcoming civic ejection in Vancouver. Evidently he has noted what happened to other mayors in other cities after they had held the office for several years. While it is quite possible Mr. McGeer would have been re-elected, it is never a sure thing and jt would injure his prestige at Ottawa to be defeated in his home town. Also it must be difficult for a man to hold down two such important positions as mayor of Vancouver and member of the Dominion Parliament. . . The tie-up of shipping in, the United States.as a result of the strike is 'something that would not be allowed in Italy or Germany pr Russia, That is one argument in favor of a dictatorship. The longshoremen on the Pacific Coast are well paid but they are a type of people particularly susceptible to the plausibilities of the airitator. The result is that they rather delight in keeping the shipping of the United States in a state of unrest and susnense. These long drawn out strikes are a erave danger in a democracy. If there is one thing that will bring about the development of fascism it is a condition such as that which exists in the shipping ports of the United States today. It is a grave mistake for people who value the liberties which they have at present under a democracy to play with fire as they are doing in Uncle Sam's domain.
