Gerster, chairman of the New York City Cancer Committee, reports a decrease in cancer mor-Itality among women In the city, 1 which he said could be attributed 'in part to increased alertness as a result of cancer education. His 'statement was based pariscn of 3,293 deaths from can cer among women reported in the first nine months of 1936, with the 3,870 deaths estimated to represent 75 percent of the cancer deaths re ported among women last year. Although cancer statistics could not be considered 100 percent re liable, it seemed of definite inter est that nearly 600 fewer women died of cancer in the first nine months of 1936 than lri an estimated similar period In 1935, Dr. Ger-!ster said. Set of Plans For New Building Re ceived From Provincial Architect Finance Problem The board of directors of the Prince Rupert General had before It at last night's regu ar monthly meeting a set of preliminary plans prepared by Henry Whittaker, but the general understanding was that they Involved the expenditure of around $175,000 or $200,000. The plans, which were examined by members of the board, provide for a modernly designed and equip ped building three storeys in height in addition to an operating room cupola. The dimensions are about 140 by 80 feet and the proposed site is on Fifth Avenue immediately to the east of the pre sent hospital building with which there would be connection. City Commissioner W. J. Alder brought forth the suggestion of a possible curtailment of the new hospital project whereby a new $100,000 unit might be built which, together with using a portion of the old building, would possibly meet the requirements of the immediate future. Mr. Alder thought that, with the financial support for the project now in sight, there might be a possibility of embarking next year upon a $100,000 project. The province had already voted $25,000, another $25,000 might be anticipated next year and there was reason to believe that $20,000 might be available locally. The remaining $30,000 might be financed possibly through the contractors. Mr. Alder again stressed the idea of making a community drive of the whole new hospital undertak ing. After some further discussion.! Mr. Alder was asked to go into the matter, particularly the financial phases, more fully with Mr. Whit taker at Victoria.. The commissioner will be leaving on Thursday of next week for a visit in the capital. Bow Valley Ranchers in Alberta Rising Out of Ashes CALGARY, Dec. 12: (CP One week after foret flames had destroyed ranch homes and build ings, causing los of $200,000 to Bow Valley Tanchers, rehabilita tion plans moved ahead rapidly. Aided by 4t newspaper relief fund, lumber was obtained and transported fere to the disaster-stricken district and an immedi ate start made on the re-buitd-tng of destroyed homes The fire sVept a 100,000-acre district Thursday, ' November 19. On Nevember 26 timbers for the first home had been placed early in the morning and. with volun teer carpenters and joiners at work, by nightfall walls had been1 started. I By mutual agreement the ranchers, in a race ae-alnst. wintrv weather, agreed the home of Ar-j thur Coelon, 10 miles southwest of Cochrane, should be re-built first. 1 Other homes will be started shortly. Coelon, who with his wife and 12 -year old twin sons, had a 'nar-i row escape when the flames raged I across his ranch, suffered a prop-i erty loss of $9,000. "I can hardly believe it's true"J he said as he busied himself with hammer and saw aiding the volun- teer carpenters. "It looked like a hopeless proposition. Today our! new home is under way and best! of all it won't have a mortgage on It." Was Like Ware The wall of flame which rawd down Bow Valley, which he wit-' nessed from a hillside, brought, back rare memories to Coelon, a' veteran of the Tenth Battalion' Canadian Expeditionary Force. "It i reminded me of the barrage that was put over on the morning of, April 9, 1917, when we took Vlmy-Ridge except that the noise of' ?uns was absent," he said. "I got my family In the old car. Three, miles away we stopped and looked ' back. Our house and bains n flam 3." The cash fund has groTm to more than $2,000.
