Local readers, per line, per Insertion - Not Competitive Routes 98 80- 1.00 .02 .25 Saturday, May 8, 1937 Peace River to Coast The chamber of commerce last night decided to refer to the Associated Boards of Trade .a communication from the Monkman Pass Highway Association asking forup"-port or their proposal to build a highway .to Hansard. That body is representative of the whole country from Prince Rupert to McBride and Quesnel and is better capable of dealing with it than any other. ' ; There are ;at present tvo highway proposals. .Qne is .already commenced and is well under way.. That is ,the highway irom Vanderjioof by Kort St. James to Manson Creek and Finley Forks to Fort St. John in the Peace River Block- Jt opens up a valuable mining .country and also taps the Peace River $lqck which is jn .Br.itish Colum' bia. The other proposal is to connect the Alberta section of the Peace River country with British Columbia by way Of the proposed Monkman Pass Highway from Beaver Lodge to Hansard. Most of the highway passes through British Columbia territory but it gives an outlet chiefly to the southern or Grande Prairie section of the Peace district in Alberta. As an afterthought the people urging this highway have marked into their maps a cut-off from Kinuseo Creek to Sunset Prairie in the Peace River unlock. The two highway proposals are not competitive. Both will probably be required but it is largely a matter of pre cedence. Both .cannot be built just now, As fifty thousand dollars of the hundred-thousand dollar vote made last year has already been spent on the highway into Omineca and there are mining properties all along that route which it will serve, there is little doubt but the Finley Forks route wil lbe adopted by the British Columbia government as its first , duty. In fact .it has ibeen adopted and is being built. The .other will very likely ;have to wait until funds are available. The Monkman Pass Highway is one that seems to be well worthy of support. .Prince .Rupert .may or may not benefit from jt. At any rate the people urging it seem to have :the courage of their .opinion and are prepared to make a fine demonstration of their faith in the route.
