Hall. The speaker, dispensing with any biography of the poet, I treated the subject from the point ; of view of "Burns as a man. He S3ld that ths birthday of Burns was this night being commemor- j ated in every community, not onlyj from coast to coast In Canada' and the United States, but in every; country' in the world where the, English language Is spoken. Bums I Was born in Scotland but he did not belong to Scotland alone, he belonged to the whole English, speaking people. With apt quotations he showed Burns as a humorist, a patriot, a .'over of nature a satirist and a writer 01 sonzs. hls love songs being among the finest in any language. It was no these qualities alone, although they all helped, that enshrined Burns in the hearts of the people It -was, the humanity of Burns, his love for his felloxman and his hatred and scorn of cant and i hypocrisy that endeared him to the world. He dined with the noble and' great but he never losf. touch with the common people and it was of their Joys and sorrows he wTote with inspired hand. The speaker advised the study of Bums from a liteary viewpoint and claimed that there were no finer lines, in poetic literature than the two from the song "Green Grow the Rashes O ." "Her prentice han' she tried on man "And then she made the lasses O'." The musical part of the prozram was In keeDlne with the address! and the excellent rendering of "Loch Lomond" by Mrs. J. H.
