News Department Telephone ... DAILY EDITION Need of Highways The Royal Bank df Ganada, in its monthly letter, tells Of the maritime provinces, meaning of course the eastern maritimes. British Columbia is also a maritime province but it is more often referred to as the -Pacific (province, not suggesting that it is peaceful but that It is the one brdvince of Canada Which borders on the Pacific Ocean The object of the letter is to point out to all 'and sundry who read bank literature that there are gdod roads in New Brunswick and Nova. Scotia, and that these provinces are excellent places for holidaying. Last year, according to the bank authority, there was spent by motorists no less than fifteen million dollars in the tvo 'provinces. British Columbia, which was affected more by the depression than were Nova Scotia and New Brunswick and which has ah even more difficult cdtlritry to lle'Velpp, 'is now tackling the highway question in earnest and each year is attracting more 'tourists. Efforts are still being made to interest the authorities in the building of a highway to Alaska. We never oppos developments of any kind if wecan helpit and'We dre'eer- taiHly not Opposed to building a highway to, Alaska- but we still -maintain that the highway from 'Prince Rupert to Terrace as more important than the Alaska highway and should cdme first, whether on the part of provincial or federal authorities. Just now there is money being expended on defences and the highway from Prince Rupert to Terrace is one of the 'most important defence projects. From that point Of view it Is a federal work or, at any rate, should receive strong federal backinir. While the cost of constructing the highway from Prince Rupert to Taylor Lake has been high it must be remembered that this has been very lartrelv a relief work and men who are'totally Unfit for highway construction have been employed on it, along with a smattering of men of the type suitable to the work. If a contract Were let, these wuuiu uc cjiuuiiaLeu anu oniy men suueu to neavy con struction Would get jobs. During the recent election the question of construction of highways under a highway commission was 'discussed. Ndw that the election is Over we shall not be accused of discussing politics if we suggest that a highway cdmmis-sion would hot employ relief labor. It would have in mind one thingand that would be the building'of the highways. The humanitarian asnect would not enter into the calcu lations. The whole question is most comnlicated. We have always to bear in mind two aspects, one the building of the roads and the other the providing of a living forthose who are unable to do a heavy day's work. The latter is a' modern View ahd'even.yet is not entertained by many who are .anxious to drive Over Smooth roads, but are hot interested whether the men out of work starve 'or hdt. BLACK Bzrnice Palmer says . . . Isn't it funny, no matter how, much or how far each geheralloh progresses or what new discoveries are made, children still continue to ilo the same 'things in the same old way? Every little think is new to them and is sbme'thihg to 'be 'examined and explored. 'WUtdhlrtg two 'children playing in the back yard making riiu'd 'life's, 'this was brought homo to me so keenly. I used to make mud pies and spent many hours Jigging and digging, trying to readh China, -Just as 'these babies wre doing. In apite of all we do, nature seems to continue as ol old, 'We hldke new discoveries but Ave 'haven't done "so triUch to change nature's plans after all. I think the drily differhee is that some df us tease to believe in fairies sooner than others. It if tdo bad we can't continue to meet life with the same keen enjoyment of childhood, that we let age takt the edge off the world of miracles around us. 'It isn't nature that changes, it is us. Or perhaps we "can't take It" we become surfeited With the myriad of things around us and let the little things escape. The children were busily molding mud pies, and my alterition was arrested by the pantomime going on between the two bdbies Interested, I asked what they were doing and was told Darlei.e was going to make a raisin pie The raisin was a worm. Carefully the pie was molded, and patted and the two sat back to admire their work. Then the top of the pie began tof crack and in a minute the worm's head appeared Quickly they dabbed another spot' of mud on its head and patted this down hjirrl nrwl sat hank wnlf. Disgusted, one of the children grabbed tho thing by the head and began pull. Longer and longer the worm got, and bigger and biggei their eyes, and still the worm Was stretching. Fanally an awed "Ohhl" reached my ears, then "Mama, come quick, its a snake!' And so, the lowly worm had done its part to open the eyes of two children to the possibilities around them. Water, mud and, land, nature's own 'toys, child: ren have played with since the beginning of lime, and will continue to do So until the end, in spite of all our modern toys and vocational facilities.
