It is thought that most likely these wares were received by the Tsimpseans from tramp vessels of American or Spanish tonnage and also from the Russians to the north. Alexander Mchenzie writes in his "Journal" that "Ihe inhabi tants (Tsimpseans) built houses, lived on islands, and were a numerous warlike eople." The Hudson's Uay Company,, to offset the inroads made by the Russian traders in Alaska, decided to tap the resources of the valleys of the Naaa and Skeena themselves by establishing a trading post nearer to 'he natives of that district. Consequently in 1813 they built a fort about half way between the mouths of the tw0 rivers. This they called Fort Simpson. The Tsimpseans, attracl-ed by the glamour sUrroundim? he habitation of the white man. ibandoned their old encampments at Jletlakatla and along Venn Passage (Jletlakatla Passage) ind moved up to Fort Simpson. In 1837 when William Dunpan the first missionary to work among these people, arrived from England it was estimated that there were three thousand natives encamped at the Fort. Five years later Mr. Duncan persuaded' fifty of them who had em braced Christianity to return with him lo their ailPlPnt pupa mnmont at Jletlakatla, where' afterward'? joined by other members of their tribe, he formed the Christian village.
