May 3, 1937 Inconvenience and Danger The busmen s strike in London at Coronation time creates a situation not only of much inconvenience to the great metropolis at a time when it is crowded with visitors for the epochal celebration and pageant but it is also a source of danger. Under the best of normal traffic conditions in London, it would have been congested and com plicated enough but to have the city s thoroughfares demoralized and disorganized with all manner of emergency means of transportation co-mingling with millions of people forced to walk who would otherwise ride will make it many times worse. It will make the situation an unwieldy and uncertain one for the police authorities who had already been making plans for extra vigilance on and around May 12. It is even conceivable that the Coronation might have to be postponed although the chances are against such an eventuality. A Political Anomoly Although overwhelmingly repudiated by the people at; the polls, the government of Premier Sen jure Hayashi in Japan, it is intimated by dispatches, may not relinquish power. Such hesitation would be inconceivable in most of the countries of the world. To disregard minorities often leads to trouble. Hut to flout the will of the large majority would, undoubtedly, involve to serious difficulties. If Hayasrn remains obdurate, internal strife in Japan may iw certainly expected. Foreign policy was an important issue in the election campaign and, for that reason, the outcome Of the present political Crisp in tne Nowery Kingdom will be followed witn mucn interest uy the world at large. De Valera's Decree President Eamonn de Valera has declared a new con- stitution for "all Ireland." Apparently, it is a further step in the direction of complete independence. Possibly, it means little more than has been going on in the Irish Free State ever since de Valera took over control there. To nil intents and purposes, Ireland is already as "free" as any Irishman would like. We do not imagine that the Mother Country or the rest oi me umpire nave mucn to worry about In this latest gesture of "independence" which we note is to be offered for ratification at a ireneral election late in June. Tf will make complete independence from Grout Rr-ifnfn wtiv, the Irish already practically have, the more or less elusive issue in the election. Probably that is all it is meant to be.
