With Manager Dave Borland as master of ceremonies, an excellent variety program was presented from the stage. Promptly as midnight struck, little Miss Lois Thompson, as 1937, made her appearance on the stage in a tap dancing number. Noisemakers and favors were distributed and the New Year was enthusiastically welcomed in. The stage program also Included selections by the Annunciation School boys' harmonica band; dancing of the Highland Fling and Irish Jig by Miss Jean Watt, accompanied by Sam Leslie; Japanese tap dancing by Shuko Mlwa and Haruko Shlmizu; singing of "CI' Man River" by Dr. R. G. Large in costume; "Three Kentucky Scots," a burlesque number by Mario Bussanich, Bertie O'Neill and Bobby Hale. Excellent orchestral music was played from the pit by the Capitollans under direction of Dr. H. N. Brocklesby, featured numbers being selections from Gilbert & Sullivan and "Down South." Fisheries big seiners Western Spirit and Vlctorac arrived in port Saturday from Vancouver to make ready for herring seining in the local harbor for Tucks Inlet reduction plant which Is expected to start grinding the fish this week. The herring are already running in the harbor and the harvest will start as soon as the outfit is ready. Preparation of nets has been under way for some time. Union steamer Catala, Capt. John Mulr, arrived In port at 8 o'clock last evening from the south and sailed at 9 pjn. for Port Simpson, Stewart, Anyox and other northern points. Returning on the Catala, which called at Ocean Falls northbound, were quite a number of local and district school teachers who have been spending the Christmas and New Year vacation season In the south. The vessel will be back here on Tuesday southbound. With a capacity list of passengers, C. P. R.. steamer Princess Norah, Capt. William Palmer, which is still the only passenger liner in regular service to Alaska owing to the American boats being tied up by the maritime workers' strike, arrived in port at 2:30 yesterday afternoon from Skagway and other northern points and sailed a couple of hours later for Vancouver. There were 194 pas sengers aboard the Princess Norah. Ten disembarked here while three took passage from here for the south. New Year's afternoon the annual official "at home" of the battery officers was held, about three hundred persons calling.
