LOCAL MAN IN NORTH Has Interesting Time Flying Cariboo Have to Be Chased Off Lakes Before They Can Land, Says Gordon Bulger Gordon Bulger, the aviator, writes to his f amily here to say that he Is now at Fort MacMurray and that he expects to make that place his headquarters until April. He is wllh Don Lawson and Gordon Haslett of Vancouver. Mr. Buiger said it was '37 below zero at Edmonton when he left there. At Fort MacMurray it was 52 below and at some places farther down the river it was as low as 70 below, the division top which he belongs extending to the mouth of the Mackenzie River. The farthest points reached by plane are Coppermine River on the Arctic and Aklavik at the Mackenzie relta. In order to resist the cold the aviators wear heavy underwear, four pairs of socks, felt boots about half an Inch thick and overshoes over them, then a "parka" like the Eskimos wear and three pairs of mitts. Dressed like that it is not as cold, Gordon says, as it is in Van couver. At Fort MacMurray mere are about two hundred people. It is quite a busy place as the.Jumplng off point for all prospectors and fur buyers. From there people use either planes or dog teams. There is plenty of snow and Ice there and husky dogs roam all over. The lakes near MacMurray are full of white fish and there are thousands of cariboo around. The' cariboo, have to be chased off the laHes before the planes can land. The aviators carry snowshoes, food supply for a month, a rifle with 50 shells, a good small radio receiver and transmitter. The whole country is one big landing field for a piane on skis so it is uie safest travelling one can do. Gordon wrote in pencil as his ink was frozen.
