It Is es- -u mm inere ls enough equipment to uroduce this --.. .uu IUU1UU5. wnnoui con 1 ovcr production and a snroad- of this quota over several at Present H you know the bulk of our halibut Is sold In the thickly populated cities of Eastern Canada, Eastern States and the Middle West; During recent years they have developed in the east an enormous sale for filletted fish prepared from cheap ground fish an example of this development Is in a variety known as Rose fish, sometimes called Sea Perch. Three years ago this specie was practically thrown away and Its production never exceeded more than a few thousand pounds monthly now they have trawlers making special trips for It and the production last year was nearly 50,000,000 pounds. It sells on Boston Fish Pier for c to lc per pound. They have trawlers'operat-- ing now from Boston which are twice as large as any operating two years ago. The week before last one trawler landed 350,000 pounds of haddock on one trip and sold her catch for from l',c to 2c per pound. They froze 18,000,000 pounds of whiting last year which ls about four times as much as normal and ls now being offered at 4c to 5c per pound packed In 50-pound boxes f.o.b. cars. These cheap varieties are Interfering with our halibut sales as we cannot compete. It costs us about 2 Vic per pound for freight alone on frozen fish and 4'2c for fresh fish. However, I am not unduly alarmed at this situation. They are depleting the grounds of these cheap fish very rapidly and generally speaking the product hasn't much merit In my opinion. A good steak of halibut is worth ten times the quantity of these putty-flavored fillets. 'Our third uroblcm Is that of quality.
