LEARN TO SWIM-This is the time of year wnen young people should be urged to learn to swim. It is not only a possible means of saving their own lives but also of saving others. If a man sees children struggling in the water trying to get out, the natural impulse is to jump in and effect a rescue but without at least elementary knowledge of swimming it is extremely dangerous. Yesterday we published a despatch showing lives because the mart was GREAT JUPITER Closest of the year, the great planet Jupiter is visible throughout the night. For many months the earth had been swinging closer and closer to its giant brother, and at midnight, July 14-15, the two orbs were only 384,592,-000 miles apart. Because it is so close, relatively speaking, Jupiter is now unusually bright, and can easily be located in the southeastern sky during the evening. At 9 o'clock in the evening it is directly south. The earth encircles the sun at an average distance of 92,870,000 miles, while that of Jupiter is 483,200,000 miles. But instead of going around the sun once a year, like the earth, Jupiter goes around in nearly twelve years. Thus, in a period about a month longer than a year the earth comes on the same side of the sun as Jupiter, and then the two bodies are nearest. This is called "opposition" because Jupiter and the sun are then in opposite directions, and this is what happened last week. A little oyer six months from now of the sun away from Jumter, and then the planets will be separated by about 580,000,000 miles. Because the orbits of the two planets are not exactly round, this distance varies,. and they can get G00,000,000 miles apart. Jupiter is the largest planet of the solar system, with a diameter of 86.720 miles, about eleven times that of the earth. It is believed that we cannot see any solid surface but only the tops of clouds of frozen carbon dioxide and methane materials which are caseous at the far hiVher temneratures prevailing here. I 1 Vicar Condemns Abbey's Course .Military Tattoos Just Whited I Sepulchres Writes Critical Cleric i EWELL, Surrey, Eng., July 22: (CP) The "glorification of mas.? murder" in the Aldershot military tattoo, and the commerciuliza- ition" of Westminster Abbey were; vigorously attacked by the vicar ' of Ewell, Rev.' C. G. Holland, in . his parish magazine. j "Hundreds of thousands of our people," he writes, "will witness i one of those (literally) whited sepulchrest euphemistacally ca'l-i ed tattoos, during the next two months. Whited sepulchres be- j cause they present war under J the aspect of a glorious adven-: ture instead of showing it as it j is, a a tilthy iuthy bestial uestiai shamble shambles. Whited sepulchres because they show our own side always victorious, the 'enemy ignominously routed. "They glofify a foul blot rn humanity. They nourish national pride. Franco's destruction cf Guernica is what war will be like, not the crash of military bands and the singing of 'Abu's With Me' as the final blasphemy of the tattoo." Of the "desecration of West minster Abbey" the vicar writes: "We are amazed that no voice has been raised at what seems to us perilously near the desecration of what should be one of the two centres of spiritual life in London, Westminster Abbey. Turnstiles and money tills have been erected, the chink of entrance money and the excited chatter of sight-seers has created an atmosphere of a show place rather than a house of God. "The excuse given is that the Abbey has lost the collections owing to the long months durinu which there has been nn services Since the Coronation was at the expense of the public purse there is no reason why a grant should not hJive been made to meet this loss."
