MADE A SPEED TEST

Fire Brigade Turned Out to Im-

aginary Fire at Carpenter Hall.

Rumors that the Union Carpen-
ters’ hall was on fire were cur-
rent in town this afternoon in
consequence of the “red devil”
being seen charging in that direc-
tion and water being played on
the roof. It turned out, however,
to be merely a test run to a fire
as part of the Fire Committee's
investigation. The run was 1nade
in quick time,

Half Crazed Prisoners.

John Perry, held by the police
owing to his crazed condition due
to drink, will have to be sent
to New Westminster. Tom White,
a Provincial prsioner from Ter-
race, B. €., will also be sent
south,

Extend G. T. P. Westerly.

A gang of tracklayers is en-
gaged this morning laying steel
on the G. T. P. grade from the
depot at the wharf westerly to-
ward the Provincial Government
wharf. Double track is being
laid.

Dogs Disturbed Court.

“Romeo,” the canine veteran of
the police court, fell foul of a
frowsy looking type this morning
on the floor of the Supreme Court.
Chief Vickers placed Romeo
under arrest and others took
care of the type.

to open up a gents’ furnishing
store here at Third avenue and

A man died the other day, and with

his death passed America’s most popu-
lar naval hero—popular because cham-
pioned by the people, though officially
denied the full fruits of his long and
brilliant service. This man was Ad-
miral Schley, hero of Santiago, one of
the great sea-fighters of history.
Shortly before his death Admiral
Schley completed for Cosmopolitan a
series of articles giving his personal
recollections of his forty-five years in
in the navy. He was not anxious to do
this for there was at least one old
sore that an autobiography must re-
open. But we urged upon him the
fact that nearly four million readers
would see each instalment of his story,
and most of these readers believed,
with Admiral Dewey, that the men who
stood on the deck of the Brooklyn that
July Surday in '98 was entitled to the
glory of that great victory, So he
consented. Not in the cut and dried
way, but unlocking his secret soul as
he had never done before. The first
installment of the autobiography, the
life story of a man worth while in the
nation’s history, appears in the Christ-
mas number, Subscription to Cosmo-
politan will be accepted until December
10th at the special low rate to Canada
