Aider has designated next week as Clean Up Week in Prince Rupert. It is a little later this year than in some years of the past but it will be timely in view of the Coronation celebration to take place the week following. It is expected there will be quite a few district visitors in town for the celebration and it is desirable that we should make a good impression upon them as well as upon the tourists who will be arriving not long after. Led by the good example of the city itself, it is to be hoped that all citizens, so far as it is within their power, will co-operate in making it a real Clean Up Week and that there will be due 'following up throughout the 1 summer. ACQUIRING YUKON Reactions vary as to the proposal to brings Yukon Territory into the Province of British Columbia. The question resolves itself down to whether we may get out of the deal enough to compensate us for any additional responsibilities there may be. The Premier has suggested that the additional financial burden will not be one of any importance. No doubt, the whole issue will be very seriously discussed before it obtains the necessary assent or otherwise from the Dominion Parliament and the provincial legislature. Naturally, it is a matter of much in terest to Prince Rupert. It is a move exactly in the opposite direction from the proposal that has sometimes been brought forward of Northern British Columbia separat- ing itseii irom tne resi oi tne province. SOCIAL CREDIT f We were interested to receive an announcement: yesterday from our good friend, Capt John Bowen-Col-thurst, that he had been selected bv Social Credit headquarters in Vancouver to carry the banner of that movement in Prince Rupert at the forthcoming provincial election. It will, at least, give Capt. Bowen-Colthurst the chance to explain to us more fully some of the fine point? of that movement. We do not know whether any great number of people in Prince Rupert fancy Social Credit. Indeed, we do not know whether or not Social Credit has a verv definite nroeram to offer the people of British Co lumbia. We shall be looking forward to hearing from Cant. Roxven-Colthurst about that. We know Cant. Bowen-Colthurst well enough to feel assured that win. draw or lose he will put up a good, sporting fight. GOLDBLOOM Prince Rupert . The Letter Box am. CLARKE'S VIEW ff''fl- Albrni-Nanaim' f- ''Editor, 'Dhy News: t i 1 was somewhat surprised to i learn through tke press that the j Presbyterian Churchj, (s entering ;upon a program of competitive missions by sending a minister into the Stewart area which Is already served by two Protestant churches. Lest I was mistaken I communicated with Mr. HoUlngworth only to learn that no attempt had been made at co-operation in any fom. Prior to the consummation of union in 1925, the Presbyterian and Methodist churches nau. co-operated for years in missionary activity In the four western provinces. So successful was that co-operaUon that there was very little overlapping and many local union and community churches were formed in which the people, worshipped and worked harmoniously under the leadership of a minister of either of the parent churches. That co-operation in the Home Mission areas was an important factor in the forming of the United Church by the union of the Pres byterian. Methodist and Congre gational churches in June 1925 and accounts for the fact that the part of the Presbyterian Church which did not concur In the union was left without Home Mission fields. In pursuing the aggressive policy of establishing missions regardless of what churches serve th-2 area Is to turn the clock back many years. The great preaching mission which was held in the United States last fall in which many denominations -operated revealed to the church leaders that the people are much! more ready for co-operation andt jnlty than are the church leaders1 themselves. The same would seem true of Canada. . Can any .sane person see a rea-! son for opening another church In the Stewart area when at present there is ah Anglican minister resident in Stewart and the United Church minister at nyox spends! iwo weeKi oi eacn monin in mat It Is quite true that Mr. HoUlng worth had communications from oersons in Stewart who are dls- iatisfied with the churches there. But there is dissatisfaction in our ihurchss in Prince Rupert, some of which Is due to us; ministers. But! what kind of a church h it that capitalizes on dissatisfactions in other churches? Had Mr. Hollingworth conferred with the superintendents of missions of the United Church who have known the church In Stewart for many years he might have learned something of missionary activity there and arrived at a ba,-sis. of co-operation. Surely the Board of Home Missions of the Presbyterian Church is not fully conversant with the situation or else has an abundance of missionary money. It may appear that I am antagonistic to the Presbyterian Church, Not so, for the United Church is ready to co-operate in any area for the furtherance of the Gospel. Co-operation with the Anglican Chirch Is progressing on the prairies and In the east. Our lo cal congregation and the Presbytery heartily supported the plan for a community church In Prince Rupert. I am concerned for the name of the church and Its work as a whole. I have served the church In the west for almost 25 years, most of the time on home mission fields in which I enjoyed the co-operation of the Presbyterian, Anglican and Roman Catholic Churches and from ny association wtlh people I have learned that the multiplicity of churches Is a hln- arance w tne. cause of Christ. In, the minds of the people the scan dal or Protestantism is In Its dl .visions. ( What, is needed Is more Chris llanlty and less churchianity. C D, CLARKE. FOR SALE Modern hotel, Hyder, B.C.
