Steps are being taken to build up a navy and the army is being modernized. Trade and commerce are being encouraged. Political parties have been abolished and the judicial system has been adapted to the new condition. Formerly there were 22 states in Brazil, each, as in Canada, claiming powers which competed witn the federal power. Under the new administration all affairs of state are centralized under the federal power. Education has been nationalized although so far it has not been narrowed to become a subsidiary of the ruling group as in some other countries. Naturally all these changes could not be brought about without causing dissatisfaction. This is particularly true of those who had benefited from the pyramiding of public positions. Under the former regime a man might hold as many as a dozen positions and draw salaries for each, salaries which it was impossible for him to properly earn. All this has become a thing of the past. There were, too, under the old system something like seventy political parties, different parties for each state. The abolishing of these has caused something of a flurry. However, the new government has been carrying out its powers with care and with a sliuht tendencv to orive wav un der pressure where it was thought wise so the probability is that the country will gradually settle down to the new conditions. BEST 1937 PICTURE The picture which was here at the first part of the week, "The Life Of Emile Zola," was chosen by motion picture reviewers as the best picture of the year,- while the picture being shown this week end "A Star is Born" comes fifth. This seems to be pretty much of a record to have two such outstanding films shown in Prince Rupert in the same week. BUYING AND SELLING IN ALBERTA Alberta means a great deal to Prince Rupert and this port means something to Alberta. In this city we buy a great many Alberta products such as butter, bacon, coal and fresh meats. Our elevator handles some of the Alberta wheat. On the other hand we ship lumber to the prairies. Each benefits from the other. If Hon. W. J. As- selstine can increase business with the prairies he will be doing a great service to them and to us. We wish he could increase the usefulness of the local elevator to the Alberta people. Possibly he may, if we drew his attention to the pregent unsatisfactory situation. .... ., ., .. . . It is the only paper north of Vancouver and west of Edmonton holding membership in these organizations.
