In the light of present discoveries, It would seem the government Is raising a nation of sneezers or, at least, contributing to the per petuation of hay fever. There was' a time when scientists claimed, if they could discover the cause of an Illness, they could also discover Its cure. But hay fever Ah! That's different. In fact, a recent discovery concerning hay fever promises to revolutionize the science of medicine and our attl-tudetoward such things, making it doubtful if anyone will ever want to do anything about thi particular affliction. You see, only the highly intelli gent suffer from the malady or so scientists now say. And Just who would be foolish enough to submit to a serum calculated to remove his visible sign,' pftip$ell&hnce? Besides, it Is possible hay fever In time win take on the dlenity of a- college de ' ' " ' greel You can readily see what science Is now up against in' its fight to el iminate hay fever. The inference Is obvious. If the malady is a sign of Intelligence and we have our own mental reservations' on that score it Is hardly likely t'hat members of the intelligentzia are going to greet with enthusiasm anything that will remove it. " For many it Is the only hall mark of brilliance by which they, may be recognized. Next time we are taken with a spasm of sneezing we will try to take consolation in that fact. And In the United States the gov ernment seems to be doing its part to encourage hay fever that Is, if there Is any basis to these theories. Goodness, Judging from the number of "adult and vocational classes now being sponsored by the government we can, by peering Into the future, see a nation of sneezers. Or Is Intelligence acquired by the kind of knowledge "that causes hay fever? Maybe only the kind one Is born with, and not that which develops by study, Is susceptible? We will have to Investigate the subject a little more thoroughly. At any rate, the thought alone Is. some consolation for the afflicted. For a long tlme:they have been the biitt -of many 'Jokes and some.of tta afflicted, In -self defense, have; organized hay fever clubs. It is' Just another case of "He who laughs" last, laughs longest" and there may come a. time when those who scoffed will beg to Join! As far as we are concerned, we are content to Just muddle along and save our sneezes for special occasions such as colds. Far be it Irom us to begrudge the hay fever victim this slight satisfaction. We are a bit curious, however, to know just how scientists are going to get around the situation. CHEERIO! OH, IT'S rou, ,MAC -X THOUGHT MR.
