There Is unquestionable logic in the position taken by this church. Roman Catholics do .not ask Protestants to support their schools so why should they be compelled to support Protestant schools? The cost per pupil to the city Is I estimated at $72.52 per annum and to the province, which shares the burden of education, J 11.40. All private schools whkh are operating independent of government support, of whatever religious faith or no religion, are saving the city and the province money. Why should parents who are paying heavily to give their children a private school education also be compelled to give the same support to the public school system as if their own child ren were benefitting by it? The Department of Education, doubtless, haj an answer to these questions. Why should not the public receive enlightment through the press? If Roman Catholics are exempted from certain educational taxes. naturally members of other organ izations providing educational fa cilities for youth would receive sim liar consideration Seventh Day Adventists, for instance. There could be no partiality. Supposing such provision was made, what would be the result? Doubtless, many Protestant churches would begin to take the education of their youth into their own hands. Fewer and fewer children would attend; the public schools. The education of youth would once again become a function of the Christian church. Would this be a tragedy? Would it lead to increasing crime waves, international Jealousies, suspicions, armament rivalries, strikes and lock-outs? These questions deserve serious consideration. A difficulty would, of course, arise in small towns and rural municipalities. The schools would all be church schools and the, particular religion taught might not, be acceptable to all. Are the people j of this province prepared to facej an Issue of this kind? Do the ad-1 vantages of State education out-i weigh the disadvantages? Vancouver. THIRD AVENUE ERIC A. BEAVON.
