W. Nicolls of Ottawa, federal director of housing, expressed the opinion that much more advantage could be taken here of the facilities or the Home Improvement Plan to finance the making of improvements to local homes. He was surprised that more had not already been done. Mr. Nicolls also discussed the Dominion Housing Act and its possibilities, mentioning among other things the importance .of zoning. W. R. About fif ty friends of A. d. Bowie Eathered in the Elks' Hall on Tuesday even ing to honor him by presenting a club bag and a purse prior to his leaving Smithers to take up the duties of operator at Sechelt in the Dominion Government Telegraph service. Mr. Bowie has been the manager of the telegraph office at Smithers for the past eleven years and has been very active in community work. During the evening different speakers praised his work in half a dozen different organizations of the town. A. C. Fowler, as president of the Chamber of Commerce, was chairman of the .gathering which took the form pf a smoker and which Included a musical program. J. G. Stephens and J. W. Turner led the singing with great gusto and everyone present Joined heartily In the program of the evening. Mr. Bowie replied feelingly to the expressions of good will entended to him and hoptfd to meet all his friends from Smithers in the south from time to time. He thought that some one had to go south to get the Alaska highway started so he was taking it upon himself to do so. Mr. Bowie left Smithers yesterday to take up his new post and he will be followed shortly by Mrs. Bowie and the family. The family will be missed a great deal In the community and they carry the good wishes of a host of friends to their new home. Wedding Present During the evening the chairman also made a presentation from the Chamber of Commerce of a lovely silver tea service to L. S. Freer who has been the very efficient secre tary of that 'organization for two years, this presentation beine in recognition df his services and upon the occasion of his recent marriage.
