DAILY EDITION. FRIDAY, JAN. 5 In presenting their platforms to the public both mayoral candidates would do well to remember an uncomplaining class of the community who for nearly a year have been patiently waiting, suffering that condition of hope deferred which, the Scriptures state, maketh the heart sick. The uncomplaining but sick at heart ones are the users of power, who are longing to exchange the uncertainties and annoyances which go with gaso- line engines for the more satisfactory kind that flows from an electric power plant. Electric power was hoped for—promised, in fact—at the time the present light plant was under construction, and not until the tests were made was it discovered that the plant could not produce current enough to enable the city to sell power. In the meantime, those manufacturers who were planning to use electric power have had to do the best they could without it until] the additional machinery could be installed to permit the plant to generate a day load of electric power. At present there are three or four planing mills, five print- ing offices and several buildings fitted for elevators which are in the market for electric power. The city itself has had its own troubles with the gasoline engine that drives the rock crushing plant. The Public Works department will have even greater need for electric power. Additional engine power is reported to be in course of erection at the electric plant, but so far no transformers have been ordered to transform the steam power into electric energy. The purchase of the transformers is likely to delay the operation of the new unit. Both mayoral candidates might with advantage to themselves give some definite pronouncement to the effect that among their first acts, if elected, they will see that the necessary equipment is ordered to enable the civic plant to enter the profitable and important business of selling electric power to the manufacturers in the city.
