THURSDAY, JAN. 11 DAILY EDITION. } | | IN FAIRNESS TO ALDERMAN CLAYTON. Im an editorial article which appeared yesterday The News stated in reference to Alderman Clayton: “He has gained in nothing but bumptiousness dur- ing his term of office, and the pitiful exhibition of childish temper he showed on the platform of the Empress Theatre on Monday night stamps him as unfit to be an alderman of the city, just as his recent assault on an Empire reporter at a public meeting stamps him as unfit to hold the office of police commissioner, for which he expressed an ambition. It would be a kind- ness to leave him at home on Thursday.” Events which have.transpired since the publication of the article make it incumbent to alter the paragraph. We would desire to amend the paragraph by deleting the word ‘‘stamps” after “Monday night” and inserting the words “and last night stamps” in its place. MORE SORROW FOR THE FAT MAN. Our good friend Cy Peck once aired from a Prince Rupert platform the sorrows of a portly gentleman in regard to reci- procity in food products, and every playgoer is familiar with the plaint of the fat cowboy in ‘““The Cowboy and the Girl’ that “nobody loves a fat man.” Now a new terror has broken out for fat folk. An editorial in a recent issue of the Journal of the American Medical Asso- ciation warns all and sundry of the danger of using thyroid in Thyroid is the base in most of the anti-fat nostrums. Some recent alarming cases of illness in the Newport “four hundred’ have been traced to the use of thyroid. So dangerous is it considered by the German authorities that the sale of the drug has been prohibited there.
