Firestone, who died in i 'Florida: Monday, of the dawning of j a new industry. That was In the early '90's. The noiseless feature of the vehicle at once appealed to all. Some with broadened vision of. the possibilities of the new idea realized the shock-absorbing qualities of the rubber tire as compared with the steel i band In general use on the wheels of all vehicles. Up to the time of the demonstra tion, Mr. Firestone was concerned ! I about the rubber tires principally as a means of selling more buggies, in which he then was engaged as sales manager. But it occurred to, him that the success of rubber tires on buggies was merely a forerunner of their use on wagons and other vehicles, and he decided to devote himself to tires. He established his business in Chicago and with the advent of the automobile, Impetus was given to the manufacture of rubber tires. In the early days of the motor-driven vehicle, when many thought of It only as a crazy Invention, Mr. Firestone 'clung tp his belief that even tually it would become the most common form of transportation and on rubber tires. First Venture Mr. Firestone's first venture in the rubber business was with two partners in the Victor Rubber Company. The business flourished until it became Involved in litigation i i - -.. The new business was set up In a made over machine shop with a force of 17 men. With the rapid growth of the automobile Industry, the rubber tire business grew apace and the Firestone plant was expended periodically until In the boom years of the World War it employed more than 20,000 persons. The company, of which Mr. Firestone was president, was one of the largest of its kind and he came to be recognized as one of the world leaders in the manufacture of tires! near Columbiana, Ohio, December 20, 1868, son of Benjamin and Catherine Fllcklnger Firestone.
