Trafalgar juare, “The newspaper, with the law, should assume the accused innocent until proven guilty; should be the friend, not the enemy of the general public; the defender, not the invader of private life and the assailant of personal character. It should be, as it were, a keeper of the public conscience,’’—Henry Watterson. age THE EYES OF CANADA ARE ON PRINCE RUPERT DAILY EDITION. Monpbay, May 22 “It is one of the amazing things to contemplate, that the people of a country should have to be argued with by the Govern- ment to induce them to see that a proposal to remove $3,000,000 taxes from their food bill is a wholly desirable thing.”’ Some of our readers may recall the paragraph. It was the con- clusion of an editorial article entitled ‘‘Who Pays the Bill—A Study in Tariff Economics’’ which appeared in the Daily News on April 11. Apparently the pithy sentence, expressed the conclusions of a number of people who had thought about the matter, for ithas been widely quoted throughout Canada, the pleasing thing to us being that in every instance it was quoted as a Prince Rupert opinion. The first newspaper to reproduce the sentence in its editorial columns was the Sarnia Observer on April 28th. On the following day it appeared some hundred miles further east in the columns of the Napanee Express. Still travelling east it appeared on April 29th in the Quebec Telegraph, and the Moncton Transcript in far away New Brunswick. Then having reached the Atlantic Coast it commenced its travels back again through New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario, appearing at last on the same day in two dissimilar papers, the Toronto Globe and the Carleton Place Herald. It is still doing service. The Globe was good enough to add its endorsement in the words, “But it is true.” An even more widely copied editorial was one which appeared on April 17th on “How to Help Prince Rupert.’’ The particular por- tion which caught the widest notice reads: “Sending away for your goods builds up some other locality and leaves your home town dead. Toronto and Montreal are growing rapidly because of the growth of' the West. When you send away for goods you pay your money to the express companies and to the eastern dealer and none of it ever comes back to yo. When you spend your monet ay home the local ‘business houses prosper, the whole community prospers and you get some of your money back—indirectly but surely.”’ This doctrine did not meet with the Globe’s endorsement for it said gravely ‘‘But someone must send.” But even the weight of the Globe's dictum did not affect the general belief, for a whole chain of papers from Moose Jaw to Glace Bay quoted it approvingly, feeling no doubt that the economic philosophy was applicable to their own conditions. Other instances in which the Daily News was quoted last month were in the case of the Montreal Herald, which instanced the account of the Reciprocity meeting addressed by Mr. Duncan Ross, as showing how Prince Rupert feels in the matter, and in the case of the far dis tant and staid London Stock Market Review which reproduced our story of the refitting with oil burners of the C. P. R. steamer Princes May. We tell these instances, not so much in a spirit of satisfaction at being the spokesman for a larger public, but because we realise that in making a paper which is read all over the continent and beyond, we are serving best the interests of our advertisers, and the greater interests of the whole people of Prince Rupert.
