Oct. 10: One fool makes many: so coes one criminal As an example of the force ol mass-suggestion the recent epidemic of window slashing in London la hard to beat. It began with the scratching of two hundred shop windows In the West Kirl and undoubtedly the work of a single hand. The damage was reported in. the press on the morning of September 10. and on the following day "slashing" as a pastime had spread to the four quarters of London and the suburbs. A day later and its "popu-lailtv had carried it into the provinces, outrages being reported from cities as far apart as Leicester and Exeter,. Then, quite as suddenly as it had arisen, the outbreak died down. A similar epidemic, but political in origin, occurred in 1981. The only possible explanation that will account for an orgy of destruction running into some thousands of pound3 ana pursued wunout od-Ject over so widespread an area Is the sheer power of evil example. LABOR HAS ITSlfRRY Commissioner of -Works Lansbury Finds Many Job Hunters , in England 1 PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS Suit Bathing in Hyde Park and Mixed Bathing in Serpentine Planned LONDON, England, Oct. 19: "People seem to tnlnk I have hun-drp'is of Jobs to give away." declared Hon. Oeorge Lansbury first commissioner of works. TThey seem to think I am a grcat-heted sort of fellow. whA now I hare ff)nd a job myself, can find a Job for them as well. That is not the way things are done at the office of works. It Is a good thing, too, because, otherwise it would lead to a good deal of favoritism." George Lansbury was addressing an audience of women at Bromley, which forms part of the vast east-end of London which he knows so well; where he has lived so long. Just now he is busy going aU over the parks and other, open spaces which belong to the crown, and f oi the care of which he is therefore responsible, to see how their ameni-tleamay be extendedMHe If talk-mg-VI introducing sun bathing at Hyde Park, and mixed bathing in che Serpentine. It was the earlier Labor Government which was responsible 'for removal, of the ban upon taxis being driven through Hyde Park, Previously . .the park roads could onlyi be used by private carriages. In some ways-Mr. Lansbury is the most InteresUng' Inclusion In the present cabinet. His fierce Independence, his Impetuosity, and his plain manner of speech seemed to render it impossible that he could ever become a minister of the crown. But those who really know him are aware that a genUe, kindly spirit lies behind his plainness of utterance. Like many other man of the "say what I mean type" he Is htaself most sensitive to criticism. His devotion to the Church of England is considerable, and at Church Congresses he used often to keep a gathering of galtered bishops and other dignitaries closely interested. He was at one time editor of the Daily Herald, and had an uneasy year once as chairman of the Labor Party.
