The opinion of all financial authorities is that we are travel- ling too fast and that we shall come a cropper one of these days unless we are careful. Looked at from a business point of view, times have been very good during the past year. There have been fewer failures in Canada and the United States than have been recorded for years, Prices have been steadily advancing and it is not difficult to do business on a rising market. The Daily News stands for optimism. We believe in the city, the province and the country. We believe in our fellow citizens and we want them to prosper. It is because of this that we give them a gentle warning that it is well to be careful. Prices cannot continue to advance as they have been doing and business will not always be as good as it is today. Prince Rupert will undoubtedly continue to grow and prosper but should a financial panic come it would go hard with those who are trading on small margins. As a matter of safety it would be well to keep within bounds. All the financial journals, bank managers and financiers strongly recommend care in doing busi- ness. There is too much of the speculative spirit abroad. Busi- ness men are taking chances which are sometimes dangerous. Of one thing we may be sure, that whatever comes Prince Rupert is likely to be injured less than any other place because we are producing. The farmers of the interior will continue to prosper, the mines will be worked, lumber will be needed and fish will be used as an article of diet. For that reason we need not fear much. Falling prices, however, will mean falling profits. After the next harvest it is possible that there will be a change. We are told that after some of the previous wars prices have soared inordinately, wages went up and times were good. ‘Then came the crash when business men were ruined, because prices fell and money was difficult to get. Men were out of work and labor-unions became disorganized. In order that we here may be safe in case of a tightening up, it would be wise to play the safe game, refrain from speculating, keep accounts as close as possible and have a few dollars on hand all the time. ‘This applies to employers and employed. Interesting Leaflet Of Safety League. The Canadian National Safety League is sending out leatlets drawing attention to various dangers. Its latest is taken from the United States Public Health Service and is worth quoting:— | AM THE ENEMY OF MANKIND I have destroyed more lives than all the wars in the world. I steal more than a billion dollars each year. I tear homes asunder; I snatch babes from mothers’ breasts. I am more powerful than the combined armies and navies of the world. I have burdened mankind since the dawn of history. I spread misery and desolation. Innocent children are my special prey. I bring pain, sickness, yet few seek to escape me. ; I destroy and maim; I give nothing but take all. I destroy health and wreck homes. I am relentless, the rich and the poor alike I seek. both weak and strong, old and young are my victims. I cause commerce to stand still; J depopulate cities and]: destroy nations. ! Am a Preventable Disease. 1! AM THE CONQUEROR OF PREVENTABLE DISEASE am stronger than all the nations of the world, am the co-worker of medicine and surgery. save thousands of lives each year. restore children to their parents. banish plague and pestilence, convert the fever ridden jungles into health resorts. prevent sickness, disease, suffering. add years to the lives of thousands. am on guard atvall times, my vigilance never ceases. bring. cleanliness, good cheer, and wholesome living. make mankind happier, I bring prosperity. Towns spring up and grow under my protection. I am necessary for the progress of the world. ships move under my protection.
