DatLy EDITION. 10 Soe REDUCTION oF PROVINCIAL. ‘TAXES. “WILL BE WELCOME. Premier McBride said in the House on Wednesday that the government had under consideration the question of giving effect to the recommendations of the taxation commission this session. This was in reply to a direct question put by Mr. Brewster, and is not as direct a reply as one might wish for it does not even amount to a political promise. It is to be hoped, however, that it does go into effect, for in these days of high living any reduc- tion in taxation may be regarded as a boon. Credit is due to the commission for its courage.in suggest- ing the fundamental principles of scientific taxation as it is a long step in the right direction. The abolition of the poll tax, the personal property tax and the exemption of improvements from taxation are three sweeping reforms which mark the re- port, and the principles that very large incomes should be subject to a super-tax, that very large legacies going to distant relatives of the testator should pay probate duty at a higher rate than small legacies bequeathed to direct descendants, and, most important of all, that in the levying of income tax recognition of the value of children to the state should be given by exemptions based on the sizes of families, have all been clearly laid down. In the latter case relief is afforded to the extent of exemp- tion of $200 of income from taxation for every child under eighteen years of age. The further concession to the wage- earning and salaried classes of an additional $500, making in- comes not exceeding $1,500 altogether exempt, is no more than reasonable in view of the increased cost of living. NEVER SAID IT, NOT ONCE. “The Moose Jaw News quotes the Toronto Daily Star as having said that ‘Canadians were idots for voting against reci- procity’’ and the latter makes this reply: ““‘We have denied this before and do so again. We never suid so—yet. We know that we did not say so because of the pains we took to refrain from saying so. We look back with pride in our files since September 21, knowing that never once did we say anything of the kind. It is pretty tough to be ac- cused of having said what you might have said, bul manfully resisted the inclination to say. It is all very well for a contem- porary to guess at what we think on a subject, but it goes too far when it accuses us of having actually said what it thinks we think about the way the people voted on September 21.” BEIRNES & MULVANY Skeena Mail and Express Leave all express packages for interior points with the Pacific Trans- fer Co., 807 Third Ave., and insure prompt forwarding. At San Francisco from Alaska to buy an aeroplane engine, A. N. Leopold, a pioneer of the Far North, who has made a fortune in mines, betrayed his ambition to cross Bering Strait by the aerial route. He and his partner, H. Petersen, expect to make the attempt next summer in a biplane they have constructed at Nome, where they reside. With the ex- ception of a motor, which was not to be had in Alaska, the machine was practically completed several months ago.
