PACE TWU CLARIDGE DAILY EDITION ELECTION TN SPRING More than once lately this paper has suggested the probability of the Dominion election being delayed until spring. The despatch received last week suggesting there may be another session of Parliament before the election takes place leads to the assumption that April is a more likely date than October for an election. A writ has been issued for an election in Calvary to fill the seat formerly represented by Rt. Hon. R. B Bennett. That writ would hot have been issued if an election was to be held thi.t fall. What we are wondering is whether Mr. King will, in his big celebration speech the week after next, announce his own retirement from active political life and ask the party -to name a successor. In the meantime Mr. King would carry on until tie international situation Improved.. He may do that or he may not. At anyrate he will make a more or less definite announcement in regard to the general election. While we agree that Mr. Kin; Is entitled to enjoy the rest of his life in peaceful retirement, we believe that he Is more closely in touch with the international situation than any other man in Canada and better able to advise Parliament as to what steps should be taken in case of war In Europe. EDITORIALS felt that the Liberal party would benefit from the retire- 'Pr"6 ment of the present Prime Min "Backstage at Ottawa," in Mc Lean's, seems to be generally well informed and he says: "Oddly enough, the chief asset of the Liberals, going into the fight, is Mr. King. He has become something of a legend. Around Parliament Hill for some i thirty years, he seems almost to ' have been there before the rocks. Constantly assailed by his politi- j cal enemies, often ridiculed pri- , vately by his political foes, without close personal associates, and living outside of offiee the life of a monastic, he has risen year after year to higher ascend- j ancy over his party. During his -twenty years of unbroken reign j tne Conservative party lias had four leaders Borden, Meighen, Bennett, Manion. In England there have been five Prime Ministers Lloyd George, Bonar Law, Ramsay MacDonald, Stanley Baldwin, Neville Chamberlain. Harding, Ccolidge, Hoover and Roosevelt have been Presidents of the United States. Through these two decades of the rise and fall of leaders through a period of upheaval and revolutionary change, Mr, King alone has ridden the tempest, remaining unchallenged as the head, of his party, holding the Prime Ministership through more than twelve of twenty years.
