EDITORIALS A BIG EVENT There is to be a .big .gathering at a .banquet being given Jn Toronto to mark the close of the twentieth year of the leadership 4f the Liberal party by Right Hon. William Lyon Mackenzie King. It is scheduled for Tuesday next, August 8. On that occasion it is understood jthe Prime Minister will take the country into his confidence and announce whether an election will be. held ' this year or be postponed until spring. He also may possibly announce the time when he proposes to lay down ihe leadership and let some other man pilot the old 1 parly 'and possibly head another government. Many things may happen in a week but it Is very probable the election date will not be announced, except In general terms as some time next year, probably ' in the spring following a winter session of Parliament. Unles the Prime Minister considers ills presence at the head of the government essential in the present disturbed condition of the world, it s iikely Mr. King -will announce his own retirement and Jie may possibly ask the Liberals of ihe country to meet and choose his successor. This may not happen, imt it is a possibility. In any event the Toronto banquet will be an important event and the speech of the Prime Minister will deal with matters of 'vital Importance to the country. MAY STAY OVER YEAR The .government term does not constitutionally end for over a year .yet. Even after the five year term expires, the government stays on until an election is held r until money is needed to carry on. That happened in the case of Premier Tolmie but such hanging on to the end is not usually looked upon as good policy. Mr. King knows that only too well. Evidently the present time is looked upon as a good one for an election from the Liberal viewpoint but the Prime Minister has to consider something more than the good of his party. He has to consider the national interests. If Mr. King thinks it is in the Interest of Canada and the British Empire that he remain at the helm a Jit tie longer, he will do so. We feel confident of that. JSEED OF JIIGUWAYS George I. Warren, publicity director of the city of Victoria, has been telling the Victoria Rotary dub how important It is for Vancouver Island to have roads and good ones. Poor little Vancouver Island has only 1959 miles of highway over which residents of Victoria and tourists may drive. We wish Mr, Warren would come to Prince Rupert and tell us what to do when we have only twelve mileg of highway over which to drive with the exception of a lew very poor miles within the city of Prince Rupert. REGRETS OF EVERYBODY Everybody will regret to hear oi the death of the late city solicitor, E. F. Jones. I vn I.I a t t am Bothers France PARIS, August 1: (CP) Citizens of the old city of 8trasbouig in Alsace are worried about the stork situation. Whether the birds which have built their nests among the Alsatlon chimney-pots have! observed the work going on at the Seigfrled Line and deemed It! prudent to pull up twigs and move : west or not Is unknown. It is ai certainty there are fewer storks this year flome of the nests which have been inhabited for years are fmpty and those birds which have como don't seem to be any too decided about staying. One French member of parliament suggested that Premier Dal- adlcr or Public Health Minister Rucart, who launched propaganda for an Improvement In the birthrate, might have ynethlng to do with it. Since the formation of th leagues for the encouragement of more births and the serious attention the government is devot-'ng to the problem of re-popula-tlon, perhaps the storks have been pressed into eenrlce in other parts of the country. This Is the idea of one Journal 1st who saw a' stork perched on the top of the war museum take his bearings and fly away in the direction of the Ministry of Health.
