LUVICO, Elkhart, Indiana. . -' - (160) This is the time of year when the pinks are in bloom. This family of dlanthus Is a very extensive one and Includes the Sweet William as well as carnations and the hun dreds of smaller pinks. Some people grow little besides pinks but they find It difficult to obtain continuity of bloom with those flowers only. Those wishing to obtain a number of varieties will find a great many In the sunken garden at the back of the court house. It might be worth while to study them. After a long wait I find my water lilies are about to bloom. Two of them should be out within the next week or two but the third has only Just formed the flower bud. The lilies were planted a year ago last spring and did not bloom last sum mer. I am giving this Information because a number of people have shown interest in making garden pools for lilies. , Canterbury bells seem to be making a good showing this year. The winter was easy on the young plant and the wet season has helped to make strong plants. Some of the bells are very large. Some people make the mistake of not tying up the plants until they fall over, weighted down by the heavy head of flowers with moisture of light rains adhering to them. If well tied before the blooms open, there is little danger of having the display spoiled. This is the first season I have tidclda In my garden and it is a great success Last fall Joe Naylor tave me a clump and I broke It up Into several niece and now I have a nke lot of bloom. It makes a wod display at this time of year. It is tall, stands up well with a little staking and It very artUttc In a novel way. Mine are all pink. Based on the experience of one vear I strongly recommend the flower for the perennial bed. Thk is one of the mallow family. There is also an annual of which I hope to know more In a few weeks. Several people have asked what re the flowers prominent in mv front porch box. To the average 'ardener they are well known. The Mrhlzanthu l snlendld for window wxes or for any place where they tet a certain amount of protection I do not consider them a ood ''lne plant ns they are too eatlly affected bv the we I her and need ery careful staking when exnoned in an open bed.
