Premier McBride and the other representative of the Two-| Man government are expected to reach here on their stumping} campaign the week after next, and there was a rumor around) town today that the Conservatives were circulating a petition reuesting the Premier to pledge himself to an early sale of the) = government lots in this townsite. It could not be learned which of the two Conservative organizations was doing this, nor could a copy of any such petition be run down. So possibly it is the first of a series of political canards. The idea, however, has a good deal to recommend it, for the reason that it would be a movement bound from its incep- tion to meet with success. Mr. McBride’s reply is a safe bet. He would solemnly and very respectfully take the matter under advisement and give the petitioners an answer at the earliest possible date. That date would be just before election, when the ‘‘promise’ would be published in large type. If this should | Improvements. ete | FIRST AVENUE. It would print this ‘‘promise”’ at the head of a long list of such “promises” of the Two-Man government as to the early completion of the government dock. Yet, the Progressives are really progressive, and might take such a step, as they have taken several, because the question at issue is a supreme matter of public polity. But the old Conservative party -—never in your life; forget it. The policy engraved in their heart of hearts is: ‘Suck the pap hard and silently; neve breathe a whisper.” REGULAR POLICE JUDGE WILL SOON BE NEEDED. With the growth of the city, which is undoubtedly going to break into a rapid gait this summer, there will arise a neces- sity for a police judge who can devote at least his mornings to the work without hunting for other jobs and leaving police court cases to await the convenience of such other jobs. During the past week, for instance, a number of cases were adjourned from day to day because the magistrate had been engaged as one of the arbitrators in the Tomlinson Right-of-Way ease. It was a serious inconvenience and considerable unnecessary expense for the men charged with crimes or misdemeanors to attend court, pay the fees of their lawyers and the expense of a number of witnesses on both sides from day to day. What is Canada coming to as an agricultural country when this once great nation of farmers has to look for her source of supplies in Irish potato patches, New Zealand churns and Kansas hen houses?” asks the Toronto Telegram. The answer is that Canada is coming to believe that the abolition of taxes on foodstuffs is becoming absolutely necessary, and that reciprocity is good spring medicine. The Winnipeg Free Press says: boy for the politicians is pretty nearly extinct, but there are some survivals which are still in a good state of preservation.” EE 2 - eee eee eee " $ ~?¢ No Man Need Use Poor Printing Unless He | “The party organ which | is a combination of boot-licker, whitewasher and general chore- | WEPT SALT TEARS 1836 |Sad Plight of a Noted Traveler The Bank of Up River Recently. iti ; | Among recent arrivals at Van British North America srdo1" from the. interior was Tom Hall of Rithet & Co., Vic- SAT aedaad coms are toria, who walked in from tne end of track in four hours, in- cluding stop at Kitselas for re- freshments, a record for this ’ wl i |} winter.
