PULLEN Managing-Editor Member of Audit Bureau of Circulations MEMBER OF THE CANADIAN PRESS JAPANESE SITUATION The attitude of Japan toward the British Empire seems to indicate that there may possibly be trouble between the two countries. If anything should 'happen, the attitude of the Japanese in this country will have to be' very clearly defined. Many of them have taken the oath of allegiance to this country but more than that is neces-; . . Tpu mi i t u i i ii :.i i . rnxiy. iney vm nave iqjiuw very cieuny wiiul iue uie.v are on. There can be no such thing as straddling the fence. For a number of years the Japanese residents of this part of the country and those coming here for the fishing season onlyjiave been making a much better living than they could possibly have "made in Japan. If they onto show that they are not really Canadians this course of living will be cut off Tor'them for all'time. They will never again be trusted. One objection taken to Japanese in the past has beer that they never really become Canadians. Thev remain Japanese in customs. This is not true in every case. There'1 are :a number of local Japanese who have adapted them-:;' selves to local conditions and may Well be looked upon as' British subjects. Of this all may be sure every Japanese will be more -or less under suspicion and will have to in! dicate very clearly where he stands. ,.. WATCH OUT GERMANY I Germany may have to watch out pretty soon to try tc ! stop 'the British invading that country and ousting Hitler.'! The British aviators are becoming very aggressive and an j destroying the usefulness of seaports, canals, munition and airplane factories, airdromes and other military oi ' jectives. The netft step may be to plan an invasion of tlx-country with all the adjuncts such as parachute troops Once the ports are destroyed, the railways and waterway? blocked, the airdromes razed and the oil dumps burned up, it would not be difficult to complete the job of con- ' quering the enemy. WOMEN IN WARWORK Government Assists Housewives In Mass Canning Campaign Release Extra Sugar By DILYS THOMAS Canadian Press Staff Writer LONDON, Aug 5: (CP)-Sugar rations or not, Britain's preserving season is in full swing. Throughout the United Kingdom women are working -to preserve for winter use all available fruit and vegetables. But It is not being left to individual initiative. The government has evolved a scheme of co-operative picking and preserving of crops so there shall be no wastage among the smaller producers. Even where orchards or gardens are remote from established preserving depots, the owners can arrange to call for a mo-mlle unit which will can all kinds of garden produce. It was early in the year when the ministry of food, co-operating with, the National Federation of Women's Institutes, worked out details for a mass canning campaign. Surveys of farming districts wert made and sites selected to establish central canning depots. Grants from the Carnegie trust and other sources enabled the group to purchase 150 "home canning" units in the United States. To that were added 100,000 cans and 144,000 preserving Jars. Three-day instruction courses were given for the women in charge of the depots. Undertake Rig Scheme So far there are 197 depots in 33 counties. It is estimated there will be 300 eventually. Canning centres sometimes deal with one village ! only. In other cases one centre will do the preserving for seven or eight neighboring villages. The fruit will be distributed either through village market stalls run by the Women's Institutes or through retailers. The Ministry of Food has co-; operated by releaslng, extra supplies of sugar. Under a special arrangement growers of fruit are allowed an additional six pounds per ration book. Housewives buying their preserving fruit are granted an extra two poirhds per ration book. Plans are also under way for establishing collecting depots for surplus vegetables from gardens and allotments. These are to be limited for the time being to non-perishable vegetables such as carrots, onions, turnips, etc., and will be passed intj ordinary commercial channels for retailing.
