Five major German attempts three by day and two by night to raid London In force failed yesterday. During the day five German planes were brought down while the British lost four. The raiders found It impossible to penetrate the ring of fire on the outskirts of the city and were unable to drop bombs on the inner city. There was a lull In the night raiding, the first alarm of the course Bri tain, H was announced this morning. I London defence batteries went I into action arly; this afternoon I when squadrons '.of Invading Nazi war planes caused the fifth alarm of the day. The waves of attack were turned back by the Royal 'Air Force In each case. Defences worked smoothly and nine German planes were shot down with loss of one of Great Britain's lighters. In each of the four ' earlier alarms either the defences were strong enough to hold back the raiders or central London was not their objective. Although London was kept in an almost continuous state of alarm from dawn to dusk few German planes managed to penetrate London defences and drop bombs. These Inflicted some fatalities. I The twenty-fifth night of bombardment for London passed with I less severity than usual but attacks on. Great Britain were widespread. Heavy attacks were aimed at several northwestern towns. Raiders also struck at southwest-I em Scotland and Wales and the shopping district of Liverpool was ibombed for the third successive night. ! Pounding At Germany 1 Meanwhile the Royal Air Force kept pounding away on the Reich 1 with another night attack on Berlin, causing a two hour and fifteen minute alarm which came earlier -than usual, beginning before mld- I night. Elsewhere the Royal Air 'Force attacked important military objectives Including big gun em placements of which twenty-five have been located between Cap Griz Nez and Calais. Both sides of the English Channel trembled, so heavy was the British attack. The Air Ministry announced that Royal Air Force bombers attacked a Berlin munitions factory during the night. Bombers also at tacked an oil plant at Cologne, a power station at Dulsberg, an aircraft factory at Rotterdam and western Gernlin communications as well as Channel invasion ports.- 4,f f: Halibut Sales American ' Yukon, 23,000, 10c and 9c, Storage.
