The forced landing of an American Douglas bomber in this neighborhood on Thursday afternoon must make it clear to the Department of Defence that the construction of a landing, field at or near Prince Rupert should not be delayed indefinitely. In case qf an attack-on this coast it would mean-so much to have the field ready for use. V. In thecase of the1 bomber which is now at Seal Cove, it will' be: a problem how to get it off the ground It has been suggested that if it vvere taken to North Beach at Queen Charlotte Islands on a scow- it would have miles of straightaway hard sand almost flat. The difficulty would be to get the plane from the scow,; to the beach. The alternative would be to take it by train to Prince George or by water to Vancouver. But I kept- the shoe laces, for after all a battalion commander is a battalion commander, while ah extra pair of boots Is a luxury." Maxim always, had1 a boil on the back of his neck, andhlsr throat was swathed In bandages which stuck. up above, the collar of : his expensive fur-lined1 jacket. His friends back home must have thought Spain was a hungry land, for they sent htm every few weeks a great hamper full of cookies, cakes, vodka caviar and those strange Russian clgaretS; consisting mostly of cardboard tubes, Paperusas, I believe they are called; Anyhow it was a good idea caviar and' vodka in the front line! One mart insisted on being called Ramon, since he was in Spain. Each pay day Ramon used to celebrate, and when feeling gay went to the j local tailor and insisted on being measured for a suit. On November 7i anniversary of the. Russian revolution, the trade unions ot a near by village arranged' a celebration at which Ramon, who had been celebrating on his own, made no less than three long speeches in Russian, which first had to be translated into English by a young Douk-hobor lad' from western Canada and then into Spanish by a Cuban. There were perhaps a dozen of these men whom I got to know quite well and another dozen or so of the higher. and, apparently mere dignified1 dtficeTS with' whom I sat in conference on a good many occasions. Some of- these meetings were, merely; to receive orders, but many of them were held to hear what ideas would be produced by the battalion commanders them selves. In either case the Russian experts would enter Into the Reach ten thousand people with a "want ad." in the Dally News. tlASSIFlEO FOR SALhi FOR SALE Dining room suite, kitchen tables, violin and case and odd household furniture.
