On Saturday evening last a Canadian-horn Japanese youth, from Smithers, Joe Alda, was ,a guest of honor at a social held under auspicei of the Canadian-Japanese Youth Organization at the Japanese Hall on his eve of departure to Join the Canadian military forces. The president, H. Suehiro, spoke briefly, followed by a gift presentation speech by Sa-dao Suga, representing the Prlrice Rupert Japanese Association, who spoke briefly and appropriately on the occasion. Alda Is the first CanadiaiVborn Japanese to volunteer and to be accepted by the Canadian military forces from this northern district. After the presentation the guest of honor replied suitably. All the guests were down to the C.N.R. wharf to bid Alda bon voyage and good luck. Mrs. JeaAuld, Sutherland, wife of John Of, Sutherland, former local tailor, who is now serving with the Sixteenth Canadian Forestry Corps in Great Britain, passed away at 12:30 midnight last night in the Prince Rupert Oen-eral Hospital after an Illness extending since August 1. She had been in critical condition for some time with her. recovery despaired of. In addition to her husband, she is survived by a 12-year-old daughter, Margaret. Born at Clydebank, Scotland, forty years ago, Mrs. Sutherland came to Canada and was married at Cranbrook on June 6, 1828. She resided at Cranbrook for a few years before coming to Prince Rupert. .She had been a valued member of the staff of Mrs. H. S. Parker's Ladles' Wear store for the past seven years. Deceased's mother In Scotland survives as well as a brother and sisters. There were no relatives in this country. Funeral arrangements, in the hands of B. C. Undertakers, will be announced later.
