A bomb, on landing, became wedged in the woodwork of a school and did not explode. Concussion had not been great enough to explode It but If it had slipped It would have struck the stone floor and caused a considerable number of casualties. Although bombs were still drop ping the woman and eight men rushed to the school and within 20 minutes had evacuated 400 inhabi tants of neighboring houses Adults and children ran to safety through the cold and falling shell spjlnters in their night clothes. The nine then returned to the school to assure themselves every one had left. At that moment an other bomb landed, its concussion setting off the wedged bomb. There was a terrific explosion and the gallant, group were buried under the debris. They all perished.
