TUESDAY. DEC. 23. 1941 Fighting at Hong Kong ... While, doubtless, the British, Canadian and Indian troops at Hong Kong are having a very hard time as they are being pounded by the Japanese who have taken possession of Kowloon, just across the harbor, the evacuation of that part of the colony was undertaken for the purpose of strengthening the defences. Directly the Japs got their artillery in place they started to pound the fort and as they vastly otitnumberec' the defenders in troops, guns and airplanes they had a distinct advantage. However, the guns of Hong Kong are'better placed and camouflaged than the enemy and, while there seems little hope that they can hold out indefinitely, we do not think any of the troops there will be willing to yield for some time to come. There is still the hope that the Chinese army may yet be able to come to their relief. If Adolf Hitler goes to Russia and tries to force his troops to go forward against the Soviets, will he ever return? Many think he will be shot by his own people and that he would rather be shot than defeated. We sin cerely hope he is shot. It would take the heart out of the war and would save the victors a lot of worry. I1MW 4h ' 'i com DB8f JL FOR Basketball Buzz I After a more or less mediocre j season basketball wiil conle into j its, own next Monday and Tuesday rwheh -.Ketchikan 'sends its smar; rkigh School team down this way ( to meet the local lads in a two game series. Last year the local boys were given a lesson hi Ketchikan when they lost two games by rather large scores bat this meeting may .see a different outcome. Comparing this year's Bo-Me-IIi team with that of last there Is one very 'Important factor in favor of the present squad and that Is better co-ordination and marksmanship. Ted Arney the fast - stepping young forward who possesses a pair of hands and shooting ability rarely seen in a youngster his size has gained in weight and speed and is looked upon generally as one reason why the team has been so suroessful up to now. His co-star on the opposite, end of the firing line is Oliver Santerbahe. younger brother of Ernie Santer-bane, once an outstanding forward for jhe King Edward Hi Sihool and later for Prince Rupert and Premier Ail-Star senior teams. Oliver is taller and heavier than Ernie which gives him that edge very essential In basketball. He was expected to play for the senior team this year but. unfortunately, the senior league did not function due to, players working overtime at the dry dock and other minor difficulties. At centre is Don MacDonald of the Fife Hall MacDonalds who Stands well over six feet and Is remarkably fast for his size. Last season saw Don a little green and shy, maybe, but. after a full year's growth and experience, he has drawn himself together to make a very fine centre.
