The Bella oooia man swam across the river and was attemntlne to free Saun ders when a second slide occurred. Slwallace was then forced to ump into the river and when he came up Saunders had almost disappeared. He got Saunders head clear but could not lift him fmm the silt and mud. Thinking quickly, Slwallace took a board from a dinghy for Saunders to hold. Dlae- ed the boat so that the man could rest with his head on It, and swam 75 feet to the north side of the river. Slwallace then went to the Bella Coola Indian village for help and with three other men paddled across the river to rescue Another bronze medal was awarded to MacRae Clouston of Huntingdon, Quebec. .Clouston was a passenger in a car driven toy Miss Evelyn Marie Dellsle . which dropped about 10 feet through a bridge approach guard and landed upside-down In the River Laeuerre July 21, 1940.
