AMY SHOE STORE LTJ The Home of Good Shoes EDITORIAL Radio Tender's Asked - - It seems evident that Smitners is to have a radio range station in conjunction with its air base and that the work on it is to be done at once. Yesterday we advertised the call for tenders and the tenders must be in by July 15. The air base is to be at or near Lake Kathlyn. Here again the interior is ahead of Prince Rupert. From Smithers the air route goes northerly to Atlhvleaving Prince Rupert behind, but one or two possible sites for air fields have been selected and others nearby so It is possible that Prince Rupert may not be far-behind the other centres. All that is now needed is ah, airfield' and a highway. These are necessary to the safety1 and well being of Canada, United States and Alaska. Unholy Noises Complaints continue to ,be .heard in regard to most unholy noises on the.streets of the city at all time of night. It is said that young men, many of them young men who are not in uniform and who might well be, let off steam after cornine- out of beennarlorSi or other places of enter tainment by shouting at the tops, of voices, imitating wolf s i i x -l' il'.i ,t: r i. i i. .cansana trying to prove inai rnnce nuperi, is a uauK-woods community instead of an up to date city. We are glad to pass on the protest against such conditions. If we are a crude people, there js rio reason to make it known to all the world. President to Speak President Roosevelt i. to make another speech to the American people and'the rest of the world on Friday, July 4 at 1 p.m. He will undoubtedly be ready then to discuss matters of national policy which will prove of great interest to Canadians. WV suggest that those interested may well tune in'that day. British Air Activities - We get only scant news of the British air activities but we are told enough to Wake' lis 'realize that the Germans are getting as great a 'poinding' as they ever gave the British, even at Bristol, Plymouth or Coventry. We are in clined to think it wouldbjS bettfer policy to give more news of these raids and Occasionally to give the world photogra phic proof of the effectiveness of the bombing. This war is very largely a war of neryes. More Work For Rupert Two more cohtraetare'.b'e3iig let. One for a $50,000 contract at the airport andthe other for harbor defence work for an unknown amount.; AJ1 this will make employment and tends to. keep; the people busy. There are also new houses being built in a 6mall way but nothing like enough to meet the reauirements. As soon as work starts on the big ships, more notising facilities must be provided. The Highway East - There is a little matter of eighty miles of highway to be built to connect Prince Rupert with Terrace and the rest of the world. It is difficult country but not at all impossible country and the highway is necessary if the city of Prince Rupert is to be of value to the country from a defense point of view and if the Alaska Highway is to be of real service to Alaska. Juneau, Ketchikan, Petersberg and Wrangell are all important towns and the only way they can tie up with the highway is by Prince Rupert. Later they may tie in at Hyder and other places, but, for the present Prince Rupert is the centre to be considered.
