In vfrw of ihe present rather tense situation in the Orirnt and tle conversations going on between the special representative of the Japanese government and the United State? administration it is interesting to note what Hallett Abend says in a recent number of "Look." He says that, when the Bismarck was intercepted, she was nn her way with two cruisers to the Pacific to hunt down units of the Ri itish fleet and that when she arrived Japan was to enter the war. The Bismarck according to this authority on Asiatic affairs, was the mightiest war vessel ever launched. For, four days and nights she withstood shattering fire from heavy British ships. German planes were driven from! the sky and day after day British planes showered bombs, and torpedoes on the mighty German battleship, which: was running for her life at a speed of from 35 to 38 knots' a speed hitherto unknown for a big fighting ship. I "Finally the Bismarck's steering gear was hopeless-; ly damaged and, after that, she could do nothing but plow the rough s e a s in a gigantic circle. Then the British I gathered for the kill. From the few surviving German officers and men the true size and might of the Bismarck were learned. She approximated 50,000 tons with a sustained .speed of o5 knots. She was too wide to pass through the Panama j Canal. Her side armor consisted of about 178 sealed bulkheads, layer after layer of them as heavily armored as the decks, which held a record for thickness. The British and Japanese warships are said to b2 of pre-Bismarck type. ACTIVE WAR PLANNED Here is what Abend says in his article about the mission of the Bismarck: "The public here and elsewhere think that the giant battleship was sent into the Atlantic by Hitler to hunt down units of the British fleet and to prey on slow convoys carrying American supplies to England. That is not the truth. Hitler sent the Bismarck and her convoys of two speedy cruisers out bv Prince Rupert's member has decided to stay on as leader of the government in spite of the opposition of a number of interests that have for many months been trying to oust him. By HELEN FORREST HALL Associated Press Fashion Waiter i NEW YORK, Nov. 21: AP) It's individuality that counts in the suit you wear today, whether its yom "uniform" or a less Integral part of your wardrobe. Maybe our designers lost per-jt-.ive lo: e. moment a .1 d created too many silhouettes for one season, but when it comes to suits they have produced a goodly numbsr of lashlans ihat c e exciting and in good taste, too. And they made It easy for us to select what Is really becoming which merely means good dressing. That suit, individuality 'carries through in style, fabric, color and treatment of fabric or trim. Even the classic suit likely has softness and easy body lines thli season. The pencil - striped suit, for Instance, usually severe in cut, may have gentle body .softness and an inset belt. And a new color may give the elansic suit a dressed-up air. The wearer, of course, handles the "make a little look like a lot" business by varied accessories and warmth t giving gadgets of fur or of cloth contrast. Vary the Cloth For smartness try two surfaces of cloth, such as the season's favorite wool and velvet teamed with one color; or two weights of the same cloth or two wools that contrast in texture but team well. Those varied suit silhouette. Include the cape which is more than likely a custom-made affair in cloth tying in the suit fabric or the cape lining with the suit proper. Some of our units will go north to protect our new Alaskan bases from Japanese-cruisers or destroyers. Whether our Alaskan bases are sufficiently prepared to conduct bombinc raids "on Japan 1 i. i i i?, at present, a military secret. i "Japan at most has 5,500 planes and not more than 3,500 are adequate fighters and bombers and she will have a front about 3,500 miles long to guard with them. Hundreds of Japanese planes must be kept in China. Formosa, within easy round-trip flying distance of the Phillipmes, will require still more hundreds. Hong Kong too, will be a thorn deep in Japan's side." In view of this situation it is now wondered whether Japan is stalling until another of the German new type battleships can reach the Pacific. Japan surely is waiting for something to happen which she thinks will make the time for an attack more opportune or she is seeking an opportunity to retire gracefully. For the distinctive and dressier type suit, trapunto (padded, quilted treatment) adds a most effective note. With so many suiters making dress and jacket combinations - and with the imagination that has gone into blouses to be worn with skirts it looks like a fine time for suits.
