"In an address broadcast from St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the Rev. Eric Loveday suggested that many of our habits in religious thinking and worship are summed up in the words of an old Scotsman who said: "When I was a young man we gathered on the hillsides in all weathers, and standing there bareheaded sang 'Praise God From Whom All Blessings Flow.' Now I am a member of the most popular church in my city, where the pews are so comfortable that you could sleep in them, and we sing, 'Art thou weary, art thou lanquid, art thou sore Now Is The Time Monday night the first monthly dinner of the season of the Prince Rupert Chamber of Commerce was held. Only twenty sat down at the table and they were not all membership committee to get to work. That there should be membership committee to get to work. There should be a membership of not less than one hundred and fewer than forty at the monthly dinner should be cause for an investigation to find out why. This is the beginning of the' autumn season, the time for building up organizations for the winter months and we know of no other organization in the city thatmight be more useful than the Chamber of 'Commerce, especially during the period when there is no city council to discuss public problems. As no more, serious charge could be lodged ' against any minister of the Gospel, 1 ' the charge will undoubtedly lead every honest pastor in Prince Ru-i pert to examine himself sincerely 1 before God In this matter. For, if we preach not the Gospel, we arei "false prophets," "unfaithful stew- ards," and the curse of such sins rest upon us. If, on the other hand, we j preach the Gospel, in its purity and fulness, we can rest assured that there will be results pleasing to God. Souls and lives will be saved, for time and eternity. The only perfect teacher and preacher the world has ever seen was the Master Himself. When He . first began people flocked to hearj Him. However, as He continued to preach God's Truth concerning man and God's way of saying man, many, ' yes, most people turned away from ' Him and "walked no more with Him." Some of them said: "this is a hard saying, who can hear It?" Others said about Him that "He was of the devil." Finally, after three years of public ministry, it seemed ' that He had failed entirely. Not' only was He led, as it seemed, help- J lessly to the cross but there was a congregation of barely one hundred souls that He had built up. Most of them were discouraged, uncertain, doubtful. Later came Paul after his conversion. He was a gifted and learned man, the greatest preacher and missionary, after Christ. He stated: "I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation." But, he also remarked that the Gospel was "a stumbling block" to some people and "foolishness" to others. The very same thing has repeated Itself through the ages and it does today. But, what Is then the Gospel? Tragic misunderstandings exist regarding this matter. Many people confuse the Gospel with some man-made idea about this or that matter. Many people Identify the Gospel with their own pet ideas concerning political, social, economic, national or international matters. On the other hand, there have been and are preachers who pretend to be specialists In things just mentioned and so, for popularity!s sake, or, to "please the people," they turn away from preaching the Gospel and Instead become unqualified lecturers on secular subjects in which they are not specialists at all. Such a pastor is definitely unfaithful in his sacred calling and he becomes only a quack in matters in which others are specialists and, there-, fore, can speak with authority. But It has happened time and again that such a preacher, if he were an able and entertaining speaker, would gain much notoriety for a time. But he has failed. Fundamentally, the Gospel is the gracious and powerful message that "God so loved the world that He . gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." All men are by nature alienated from God through sin. Only God has provided a remedy against sin. That remedy Is Jesus Christ. All who accept Christ, the Son of God, humanity's Redeemer, are saved from guilt, curse and dominion of sin. They become "new creatures in Christ," able through Him to lead new lives, according to the will of God. This is true, individually and collectively. When so much sin pre-1 dominates and curses mankind today it is because man persists in refusing to accept Christ. The Gospel INTERMEDIATE BASEBALL Tonight C(30 P.M. r, and N. vs.. People chose to reject it. Still, the enly salvation of the individual and of society is contingent upon a. true acceptance of Christ, his person and his works. For He only is "the Way, the Truth and the Life." I believe that every minister of the Gospel, also in Prince Rupert, who is called by God and ordained by the Church into the Gospel ministry, Is an honorable man and sincerely concerned for the true welfare of the people entrusted to him. Personally, I take the privilege to make this testimony: "I love the people I have been called to serve, as a Minister of the Gospel. I pray for them, the children, the parents, the young and the old. I know that their spiritual, moral, social, economic, material, political, temporal and eternal welfare is definitely and Intimately related to their acceptance of Christ as their Savior, Lord and Master. I know that to everyone of them the highest wisr dom for time' and eternity is the word of God. His law and His Gospel. Therefore, with a good conscience I state that it Is God's word I teach and preach to the people entrusted to me. It is God's word I teach in Sunday School and confirmation classes. It is God's word I preach to my congregation. I readily admit that both the teaching and the preaching ought to be done much better. I, therefore, pray God help me to be more faithful and diligent in the ministry entrusted to me. I invite the people to hear and believe, and live according to the Gospel of Christ. I, as a pastor, am under sacred obligation to preach and teach the Gospel. The people themselves are responsible before God in the matter of hearing, believing, and living according to the Gospel. I believe that Gospel. Therefore I speak." 'I, as one of the local pastors, am very thankful for many years spent at college, university and theological seminary likewise for the years spent in the Gospel ministry. There have been sad experiences but more joyous experiences so rich and varied that no other vocation or profession could ever provide them. Constructive criticism is good. I for one receive it gladly. It spurs on to self examination and faithfulness. During the past few months I have furnished three nice cheery bedrooms and I could rent llfty similar rooms if I had them. It Is shameful to see some of the places soldiers' wives are obliged to occupy in order to be near their husbands. I know several people who have spare rooms but somehow will not bother making them available to those who so hadly need them. It must be because these people do not fully realize the Importance of do!n,s their part in that way towards our war effort.
