The result of the provincial election proves that it is a mistake to be sure about anything. At least two local organizations were very sure of the outcome of the poll this week. Neither had cause to be cocksure. i It is usually when electors get the habit of winning and cease. to be keen on winning that defeat comes. When J. C. Brady was elected here as member at Ottawa, the Liberals felt sure of winning too sure to do anything .and at the next federal election the confidence of Brady caused the loss of the seat to the Conservatives. This week saw the anniversary of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Admiral Lord Nelson. His prayer for victory just before going into battle is looked upon not only as a model prayer but as a model of literary effort. It was: "May the great God, whom I worship, grant to my country and, for the benefit of Europe in general, a great and glorious victory. May no misconduct in anyone tarnish it and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British fleet. For myself, individually, I commit my life to Him, and may His blessing alight on my endeavors for servine my country faithfully. To Him I resign myself and thejust cause which is entrusted me to defend." Now that the elections are over it might be well to'" consider what is to be done about the local rats. The city seems to be overrun with them. Not only are they a nuisance to businessmen and residents but they are a grave danger to the health of the community. As colder weather comes, on, the rats move into the basements or else insinuate themselves beneath the foundations or into any place that is warm. What seems to be needed is a concerted movement toward eradicating the pests. j Written for the Canadian Press By ALISON SETTLE LONDON, Oct. 23: Pi Two scarves which Dorothy Thompson American columnist, took back to the United States after visiting Britain will-be shown in the London style Designers Export collections which open In New Ycrk in November. One scarf, called "Happy Landings," is as blue as the sky and has the wings and emblems of the Royal Air Force and catch phrases engraved across it. The other scarf Is dedicated to Free French naval forces and carries the French emblems and the cross of Lorraine. One version of the 'Happy Land-, Ings" silk print has been kept only for export because of the modesty of Britain's airmen.
