"""ISII COLUMBIA , FIRE TALK CUSTER IS DEATH FOR FOR GYROS! ON SCREEN Chief II. T. Lock Is Interesting Speaker at Weekly Luncheon of Service Club Yesterday. Developments In the field of fire prevention which have revolutionized conditions existing today compared with those of fifty years ago were described by Fire Cliief H. T. Lock In a timely address before the Prince Rupert Gyro Club at luncheon yesterday. Mr. Lock told how the offensive was being taken against fire through pre-venUve measures rather than being merely on the defensive by concentrating only on fire fighting methods. He also mentioned how fire in various hideous ways was used in modern warfare and closed his talk with a demonstration of how an Incendiary bomb was fired. Of course, Mr. Lock admitted, while much progress had been made In the matter of fire protection, there was still a, long way to go before Immunity could be claimed. The chief compared the first primitive fire pumps, which required superhuman efforts on the part of the men who operated them, with the highly effective mechanical pumps of today. Organized steps which had been taken by Insurance companies to develop scientific fire prevention methods were described in some detail by the speaker. Special at tention had been paid to seeking out the causes of fire and remov ing them. With this end in view building methods had to be revo lutionized and regulated. Even in Prince Rupert improvement in building conditions could be observed. Mr. Lock compared the new post office and the new hospital here with some of the anti quated buildings with their fire hazards. Even comparison here showed tremendous progress, in hundreds of unsuspected ways sci entific fire prevention reseaich and organization today afforded protection against the ravages of ftre. Mr. Lock referred to the importance of fire drills in schools, frequency of drill and maintenance of discipline being prime requisites. In this way when emergency did come there was clear thinking and disciplined acting instead of a panic-stricken mob. There was an illustration of this only .ecently at Borden Street School here when, at a fire drill, a young .tuaent, with an Injured foot and unable to walk, was carried out of the building by two elder students without suggestion from principal or teachers. Fire in War. "And now today,'- said Mr. Lock, "we find that the enemies of human kind are using fire in any and all of its hideous forms in an effort to seek our destruction. In offence and defence, we too have been forced to adopt such methods. Fire in wartime has increased our natural hazards a thousand fold and it has become necessary that every individual in vulnerable areas should become efficient in the methods to control the incendiary bomb. In England today thousands of men and women regard it as their Job to watch their own streets and their own roofs. Their weapons are the stirrup pump, water and buckets of sand. They have risen to the suggestion of private fire fighting and watching and so work out their own salvation." In his demonstration of kindling an incendiary bomb, Mr. Lock used the constituents of magnesium, thermite and aluminum powder with phosphorus as ah igniter. He ihowed how the application of water Intensified the flame of the Incendiary bomb. The president of the Oyro Club, George Rorie, was in the chair and thanked Mr? Lock for his discourse. New members' in the per sons of Dr. J. J. Gibson and Alfred Rlvett were welcomed. Gucste were Lome Aggett of Vancouver,! and M. McCallum of Massett. i Next week's speaker at the Gyro Club will be Dr. Neal M. Carter, director of the Prince Rupert Fisheries Experimental Station, USED BAD-LANGUAGE HOBOKEN, N.
