DAILY E&m&ti THE DAILY NEWS PRINCE RUPERT. BRITISH COLUMBIA Bcary Afternoon Except Sunday by Prince Rupert Dairy New Limited. Third Araioe O- A. HUNTER. MANAGING EDITOR FRIDAY, 11th BUTTER Grade "An. E.C'.D. EGGS Thursday, December 10, 142 EDITORIAL A Working Brother . . . There was a day when newspapermen were notorious for changing jobs almost as often as they changed underclothes. It was a peripatetic profession, so to speak, ami the haphazard wanderings of those claiming it for their own suggested that they wee laboring in the Fourth Dimension rather than in the Fourth Estate. It is not the most constant of professions now, but the average newspaperman's life with one employer is prohabiv ten times longer than it was thirty-odd years ago. It rarely happens, even hi these times, that a good roan can be persuaded to stay for long on a paper of small circulaUoa even at a fabulous salary if such were ever offered. It is the larger audience, nttthe salary, that attracts a good man and the easiest way of. getting such m audience is to transfer to a big newspaper. Big in ize Arthur Penny, editor of the QoebSc Chronicle-Telegraph, is one of those rare exceptions fwh$ ' has found a large audience the hard way. He has made his awfience a national one by the foreefulness of his editorials whil finding time, as well to build up an excellent newspaper 10 other respects. Scarcely- an editor in Canada but searches the exchanges to see what Mr. Penny has to sav or this or that topic and usually what Mr. Penny has to say is so well thought out and forceful that his editorial gets reprinted here, there, and everywhere. Result: Mr. Penny's average audience, instead of being Hmitad to thousands, ean be numbered in hundreds of thousands. . He is now celebrating has twenty-fifth year as editor first of the Quebec Chronicle and latterly of the Chronicle-Telegraph. During those twenty-five years he has built up for himself a position similar to that of William AHen White, editor of the Emporia Gazette, whose words count for more in the United States than the words, say, of a leader-writer on the New York .Times. Unlike White, however, Penny, the man, has been httle publicized; he has beh content with the bushel of editorial anonvmity as long as the light of his opinions shone clear. That they haw, shone clear is proved by the freedom with which they are quoted. WEEK END BARGAIN SALE SATURDAY, 12th Carton Grade "A". Limited quantity at this price, but never been out of stock.
