MONDAY, JUNE 10 NOW PERHAPS A “DUST LIBEL.” In view of the famous ‘“‘rain-libel’’ with which Vancouver, envious of Prince Rupert’s superb prospects, has plagued our city since ever it began to be, a serious question arises regarding the recent extraordinary fall of voleanic dust. What is Vancouver going to say about that? The prospect is alarming to say the least of it. Ifa little rain (a smaller rainfall really than Van- couver’s own) caused such an ill-to-kill rain libel, whatever will they say down south about our latest ‘‘dust-precipitation?’’ Visions of Prince Rupert pictured in the Vancouver press as a modern Pompeii, with stores, residences and streets deep buried in the fatal mantle of volcanic dust rise before the eyes. The in- spiring thought of our city council in session this evening perhaps, caught by the deadly dust-fall and buried at their posts of duty like the Roman sentinel of Hercuianeum, fills the mind with pride. One can fancy Chairman of the Board of Works Morrissey nobly standing his ground with the words: ‘I move that the City Sprinkler be ordered out’’ stiffled on his lips, and the Mayor sim- ilarly suppressed while making the suggestion that the dust trouble be referred to the committee dealing with the light plant ash problem. Vancouver would assuredly glory in the embellishment of a Prince Rupert ‘‘dust-libel’’ to match the rain libel so wonderfully frilled. Really it was most injudicious of the local newspapers to say anything about that dust. Vancouver will certainly do some- thing dreadful about it, and perhaps send tourists here to see the ‘‘voleano’’ on Kaien Island. ' Today there are within a short) radius three bodies in the morgue to testify to the full that rational man cannot fly with the skill and surety of the irrational gull. We have come into the habit of making enlarged photo- graphs of the future; we talk glibly and vaguely of the benefits that will accrue from aerial navi- gation; we do not know just what these benefits will be, but we are, for some reason, certain tht they will be invaluable. In the mean- time the only concrete evidence we possess of our future great- ness is a long and grisly list of dead.
