The capacity of Canadian, industry to produce in almost unlimited quantities has been amply proven during i the war; we have in Canada today national resowce, : .technical skill' and1 industrial machinery, all of which have peen developed on a large and increasing scale, and there is less excuse than ever for unemployment -in Canada, with its consequent, poverty and distress, says A. K. Mosher, president of, Uie Canadian Congress of Labor, ir. a message for the New Year. If Canadians, enjoying sucl a. fortunate situation, cannot develop an economic system which will provide a high standard of living, the problem must be considered: insoluble but there are growing indi cations that the people' of Canada, and particularly th( organized workers, have determined that they will not go back to the conditions which existed prior to the war. and that whatever changes may be necessary in the econ omic system to provide for the security ami well-being oi every citizen, will be demanded. The name which' a satisfactory economic system wilj bear is of no importance ;it is the fact alone which wil1 be insisted upon. The war has proven beyond any doubt that financial, barriers to industrial development are artificial, and that what is physically possible is financially possible. The same nation which, in the depths of the depression, was forced to maintain- hundreds of thousand? of people on relief, now finds it necessary to organize its manpower in order to. utilize the services of every able-bodied adult, and this is a lesson which surelv will nnt. hp readily forgotten. When the war ends,, there will be a vast market in Canada, and in many other countries for the commodities which Canada can produce. In the field of housing alone, there will be room for enormous projects, and there ought to be work available for all who are able and willing to. perform it. By a realistic approach' to the problem, forgetting ancient economic myths, Canada will be able to produce in peacetime on a scale quite as great as that required in war-time. But the reconstruction of a world of peace and security must go farther than economic readjustments. Canada must take her place among the nations of the world in laying the bases of an enduring peace through the provision of adequate machinery for mutual protection against injustice and oppression. This will require a clarity of vision, a breadth of view, a confident courage far beyond anything which we have known, in the past, both in domestic and foreign policy. But the people of Canada, whose sons are fighting in far-off lands, are , learning that the world; is a small one, after all, and that it maybe made a. happy home for the human family. Encouraging War News . . . e The recent news from the battle'f ronts is so encouraging that we may enter upon the New Year with greater v-u.ixiucntc uiuii ever in ultimate victory. While we are properly warned that, there may still be a long and bitter struggle before us, with setbacks and: disappointments and. heavy losses, we are nevertheless justified in feeling a i?- Tt ??rod of l)reParation has passed, and that the Allied Nations are now in a, position to take the initiative and hold it until the war is won. DECEMBER 29, i942 SPORT CHAT It never did take much n start a football argument between men from Canada's east and Canada's west. Jt's the same in .Britain when .the men of the R.OA.F. rally in fall weather that is not so different from Canada's football days. Men like Pilot Officer Sammle Taylor of Saskatoon and Flying Officer Ken MaeGlllivray of Toronto argue like ai couple of "Monday, morning dluarteroacks." Sammle naturally is in favor of, the western code entirely. Afttr all he played outside wing for Retina Rough Riders before Joining the R.CA.F. Ken, late of Hamilton as well as Toronto, has been around the football circui: a bit himself sometimes as a player, sometimes as a referee, and qultf often in the press box in the in terests of a Toronto paper. Now he'h with the Public Relations Division. Fit. Lt. Tommy' Walker of and Flying Officer Jerrv Montv of Montreal have had a lot of travels together. Tommy as a top-line Canadian swimmer and Jerry as a high and fancy diver. Not Ions aco they found themselves England- . bound together and in various places In England they've been making a considerable splash In whatever pools were available. 1 "Tommy seems to be swimming raster than ever," said Monty. Tommy has a brilliant record as a swim coach and was a Canadian Olympian of 1928, a British Empire Games participant in 1930 and coached the Canadian Olympian.? of 1932. Jerry was on the British Empire team of 1932 but was never an Olympian. "Alfie Phillip.s of Toronto was my main trouble so much better," he said by way of explanation. Monty has dabbled about with many sports with considerable success. He tried water polo, boxing, ana played Big Four football with Montreal, Now believe lt or not he's playing field hockey and says don't laugh because it's a rough tough game the way they play it In England. In peacetime he was one of Canada's i finest divers and at one time held , the. National high board title. His quality as a bomber pilot came out one night when he' was heading toward Essen and refused to turn back Just because one of his en gines "packed up." He dropped his ' cargo on Essen and then headed home. Sgt. Perre (Pepe) Trudeau of Outremont, Quebec, has a Job now of snapshooting with machine guns from the turret of a Wellington Bomber but he has a pretty sharp eye when it comes to firing hockey goals, as Montreal hockey fans will remember. Recently he showed he is Just as alert In the gun turret. With his crew he was sent off to bomb Germany when ME109S. came up to attack the daylight bombers. Trudeau drew an accurate bead- on one German fighter and sent it crashing to the earth. In peacetime Pepe played ri?ht wing, for Mont St. Louis hockey teams last wYntrtr, while rcompletlng his training, managed to, get in some hockey. savoy HOT E L Carl Zarelli, Prop. Phone 37 P,0.
