PULLEN, MANAQINQ-EDITOR MILLS NEW PRESIDENT Annual Meeting of Prince Rupert Bowing & Yacht Club Held Last Night. C. C. Mills was elected president of the Prince Riipert Rowing & Yacht Club at the annual meeting last night with Dt. r. o. Large as. vice-president and Alex McRae continuing as secretary-treasurer. Other members of the executive for the year are J. J. Payne, Dr. J. P. Cade, Dr. L. W. Kergin and William Richards: In view of existing conditions, tit Yl.i 1 .. e FRIDAY. MARCH 13, 1942. The Alaska Highway . . . The Alaska highway of which so much was expected in the way o opening up the north coast country is to be located so far inland that, while it will undoubtedly serve a large and valuable section of the country, it will be so far from Prince Rupert that we shall hardly know it is there. It may at first tend to draw people away from British Columbia toward northern Alberta. It is noticeable that the first movement favoring Alaska highway construction came from the coast cities of beattle, Vancouver and Victoria. Now they seem to be left out in the cold. Possibly later Vanderhoof may link up with the new highway and provide art almost direct route from Vancouver to Alaska. This extension of the northern road would open up the Omineca mining cuuiury wnicn is saia to oe ncn. The British Columbia section of the Peace" River country Dawson Creek should be the first to feel a filjp from the new business brought by the highway in this province. Preparations have already been made at Dawson Creek for a large storage centre and refrigeration plant and about three thousand army construction corps men are expected to land there as soon as the freeze-up is over. This road will undoubtedly connect up sooner or later with the highway to Prince Rupert. Many people who wish to visit Alaska over the new Highway will doubtless be attracted to Prince Rupert as an alternate scenic route to the north coast. For the moment, forgetting the military significance of these two highways, we must admit that they will have great commercial and industrial significance in opening up new mining, timber and waterpower areas and also they will be an aid in providing approaches to air fields in the north. They will mean a new era of development for the whole north.
