It-is part of war and we must be prepared to face what comes prepared not only to protect ourselves but to do what we can to fight the aggressor off. While what has happened was to be expected,' the event must necessarily be impressive to us all. It is the first time that an air raid has been made by an enemy on the American continent. It is the first tme that Alaska has been attacked and thus brought directly into the conflict. Dutch Harbor is more than half way from Japan to Prince Rupert so we may now, indeed, realize that the war is almost at our doorstep. It is no longer something far removed in which we are not physically interested. It is no time for panic but it is time to do sensible things. It is the eleventh hour for taking wise precautions. I'ilONI.S 11C OR 117 1 If i DAY DREAMS In the Tuesday issue of the News Commerce was on wonder just what our provincial or Dominion government would do without them. If the Chairibef of Commerce is our government. Just whom do they really represent, and why the need to go to the expense of any other gevern-mefit agency wJmtefer Personally I agree with most of ,lthe chamber's findings and re- commendations, although in the1 matter of railways they are about, twenty-five years behind the times and do not get at the basic trouble in any way whatever. As regards compulsory saving it seems to me we have just about enough compulsion already for a so-called democracy. There will soon be so many paycheck deductions that one will need to have an independent income in order to cover them. I hear a great deal of oompiamt about the small amount of money thai is now left after the cent of living is paid and a large number of men do not stay here because of the cost of living, lack of living accomodation and the lack of amusements. While I do not know a thing about the reason for closing up some of our local places recently, it is my opinion that we are supposed to be able to exercise our own judgment to a certain extent and we are not compelled to pat-.roniae any place that is not all it shosld be. Again, some people do not Hke the things that others And to their- liking. Which brings os ba;k to the question of how much freedom one really has left anyway. I know a good many people who have been in Rupert a year or two and they have not been invited into a private home at all. They have no place to pass a sociable evening and their only recourse is the theatre, beer parlors and the clubs. In fact, there are no roads, no ears and no place io go for a ride into the country unless one admires dead timber and muskeg. One cannot ramble around town ina watch the new construction or watenront doings, without bumping into a sentry, who says 'Verboten." I am not criticizing all precautions but merely men tion the lack of sights one may see , in their spare time. Soon we shall get smaller and smaller portions at our restaurants bat the price will remain the same. I hope the Chamber of Commerce will bear this in mind-as well as the government offi cials, who seem so anxious to take at least. While we have problems regard ing air raids, and the housing situ tion is terrible ettll one cannot help but notice so many women and girls coming Into Rupert from the interior and the south as well as so many men, who stay here lust so long and then head for Vancouver. That is for the Cham- bsr of Commerce to work out the answer. If they can solve that one mey win deserve a v. c. and we shall not mind how much terri tory they cover m the future. we even wUh them luck in the move to get the employer- employees or the Dock pulling to gether for better results. That might possibly be one of the most important things they seem to be considering at present. However, the circle still exists and we go round and round and come back to where we started Where do the city, provincial and Dominion representatives of the oeonle's government come in?
